Southey's wonderfully sprawling final work, described in the Encyclopaedia Britannica as 'a rambling miscellany packed with comments, quotations, and anecdotes', was begun in 1834 as a series of observations, essays and stories, loosely connected by the fictional narrator Dr Dove. It famously contains the first telling of 'The Story of the Three Bears' in chapter 129.
