From the Preface: "These papers are now collected at the request of friends and correspondents, who think that they may be useful; and two new essays are added. Most of the articles were written as occasion called for them within the past sixteen years, and contributed to various periodicals, with little thought of their forming a series, and none of ever bringing them together into a volume, although one of them (the third) was once reprinted in a pamphlet form. It is, therefore, inevitable that there should be considerable iteration in the argument, if not in the language. This could not be eliminated except by recasting the whole, which was neither practicable nor really desirable. It is better that they should record, as they do, the writer's freely-expressed thoughts upon the subject at the time; and to many readers there may be some advantage in going more than once, in different directions, over the same ground. 13 Articles: The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection. Design versus Necessity-A Discussion. Natural Selection not Inconsistent with Natural Theology. Species as to Variation, Geographical Distribution, and Succession. Sequoia and its History: The Relations of North American to North Eastern Asian and to Tertiary Vegetation. The Attitude of Working Naturalists Toward Darwinism. Evolution and Theology. "What is Darwinism?". Charles Darwin: Sketch Accompanying a Portrait in "Nature". Insectivorous Plants. Insectivorous and Climbing Plants. Duration and Origination of Race and Species. Evolutionary Teleology. Minor pencil markings form prior seller, binders glue transfer at gutters of paste-downs, light spotting foxing in front matter and rear pages, text block is generally clear, free rom spotting or marking. Biding square and tight. Light scuffing on spine and at hinge edges. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

"It is here shown that each different form [of flower], although possessing both kinds of sexual organs, is specially adapted to be fertilized by the pollen of another form, and that when artificially fertilized by its own pollen less vigorous offspring, bearing some resemblance to hybrids, are produced. He says, "no little discovery of mine ever gave me so much pleasure as the making out of the meaning of heterostyled flowers"." (Encyc. Brit., 11th Edn.) Freeman 1278.
