Description: 800 pages [400 numbered pages per volume]. Decorative endpapers. Illustrations (some in color). Index. Minor wear and soiling. With an Introduction and Commentaries by Joe DiMaggio. This fantastic compilation covers DiMaggio in the minor leagues, as a Yankee rookie, as a home run hitter, in the World Series, winning a batting title, his consecutive hits streak, the World War II years, his return from the War, the great 1949 Pennant Race, his final year, and his years in retirement. Joseph Paul DiMaggio (November 25, 1914 - March 8, 1999), nicknamed "Joltin' Joe", "The Yankee Clipper" and "Joe D.", was an American baseball center fielder who played his entire 13-year career in Major League Baseball for the New York Yankees. He is widely considered one of the greatest baseball players of all time, and is best known for setting the record for the longest hitting streak in baseball (56 games from May 15 - July 16, 1941), which still stands. DiMaggio was a three-time Most Valuable Player Award winner and an All-Star in each of his 13 seasons. During his tenure with the Yankees, the club won ten American League pennants and nine World Series championships. His nine career World Series rings is second only to fellow Yankee Yogi Berra, who won ten. At the time of his retirement, he ranked fifth in career home runs (361) and sixth in career slugging percentage (.579). He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1955 and was voted the sport's greatest living player during baseball's centennial year of 1969. His brothers Vince (1912-1986) and Dom (1917-2009) also were major league center fielders. The author of more than 30 books, Mr. Whittingham spent his adult life writing, from books on college football and the Bears to novels set in Chicago. He coaxed the reserved Joe DiMaggio into opening up, chronicled the police work of former Chicago detective Joe DiLeonardi and penned books on State Street and Skokie. He was perhaps best known for his books on the history of sports teams, including the White Sox, the Washington Redskins, the Dallas Cowboys and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Description: Two volumes. Compiled and edited by Richard Whittingham. Introduction and commentaries by Joe DiMaggio. First edition, first printing. Signed by DiMaggio on title page of Vol. I. Publisher's blue cloth with titles in gilt to spines, red, white, and blue marbled endpapers, set designed by Susan Kinealy; housed in original red slipcase with DiMaggio photo to front cover, and front cover and spine lettered in gilt. Fine set; near fine slipcase, with a small tear to top of spine. Overall, a superb set. The DiMaggio Albums traces DiMaggio's life from the minor leagues to his major league retirement with a variety of unique archival materials, including news clippings, photos, posters, and more. DiMaggio played all thirteen seasons of his career with the New York Yankees and was selected as an All-Star thirteen times. With his exemplary hitting and fielding (he was nicknamed "The Yankee Clipper" because of how he sailed around the outfield) he helped power the Yankees to nine World Series titles. He holds the record for the longest hitting streak, at 56 games, which is considered one of the most statistically remarkable records in all of sports. Outside of baseball, he was known for his high-profile marriage with Marilyn Monroe. DiMaggio was one of the rare athletes that transcended his sport: his association with a bygone era of America was noted in Simon and Garfunkel's Grammy Award-winning song, "Mrs. Robinson." Ted Williams said, "His career cannot be summed up in numbers and awards. It might sound corny, but he had a profound impact on the country."
