Eddy Jr. "By 1900 Whipple's various business concerns were suffering a downturn and slowly reducing his family's wealth. He was forced to let the family's hired servants go, leaving Lovecraft, Whipple and Susie, being the only unmarried sister, alone in the family home. In the spring of 1904 Whipple's largest business venture suffered a catastrophic failure. Within months he died due to a stroke at age 70. After Whipple's death Susie was unable to support the upkeep of the expansive family home on what remained of the Phillips' estate. Later that year she was forced to move herself and her son to a small duplex. Lovecraft has called this time one of the darkest of his life, remarking in a 1934 letter that he saw no point in living anymore. In fall of the same year he started high school. Much like his earlier school years, Lovecraft was at times removed from school for long periods for what he termed "near breakdowns." He did say, though, that while having some conflicts with teachers, he enjoyed high school, becoming close with a small circle of friends. Aside from a pause in 1904 he also resumed publishing the Rhode Island Journal of Astronomy as well as starting the Scientific Gazette, which dealt mostly with chemistry. It was also during this period that Lovecraft produced the first of the types of fiction he would later be known for, namely "The Beast in the Cave" and "The Alchemist." " (from Wikipedia)

Rothovius Howard Phillips Lovecraft: A Bibliography by Jack L. Chalker Walks with H.P. Lovecraft by C. M. Eddy, Jr. The Dark Brotherhood would be the last of Arkham House's original Lovecraft fiction and was in "posthumous collaboration," whatever that is, with August Derleth. Derleth would, of course, continue to publish Selected Letters and reprint Lovecraft's stories, but this ushered in the end of the publishing house's initial mandate. In 1989 S. T. Joshi would arrive on scene with new editions of Lovecraft's fiction and this is where this bookseller first encountered Lovecraft. This volume is attractive for both its lovely dust jacket by Frank Upatel and the specialized nature of it's contents favorable to the Lovecraftian scholar. I have always found this to be one of the most attractive Arkham House editions next to The Shuttered Room.

Price: US$280.00 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: Arkham House, Sauk City, WI, 1966. First edition/printing black Hardcover with gold gilt print on spine and DJ, x, 321 pp. One of 3460 copies printed. 13 interior B&W glossy illustration (photos, art). Collection of 25 essays and stories by and about Lovecraft. Other writers include Derleth, C.M. Eddy, Jr., W.S. Home, F. Leiber, J.L. Chalker, A.E. Rothovius, & J.E. Vetter. Intro., Final Notes, and more by Derleth, who calls this a "minor" effort, but, like its predecessor (The Shuttered Room), it's a gold mine of interesting material for Lovecraftians. Book has tiny bump at back bottom corner with corresponding small wrinkle to DJ. My barely visible name-stamp on ffep and top textblock edge. (Sorry - like most of my AH books, this was purchased from Derleth in 1960s without any thought of ever selling it.) Overall, an unusually fine, mostly unread copy.
