London, Jack.. THE CRUISE OF THE DAZZLER. (in the July, 1902 issue of St. Nicholas Magazine, Vol. XXIX, No. 9).. Century Co., July, NY, 1902.

Price: US$450.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Original printed wrappers, 7 x 10 inches. Some loss of paper at spine ends, minor chipping to bottom edge of wrappers, else fine, a remarkably clean and unworn copy Generally considered the rarest of London's novels, this periodical publication predates the book publication by 3 months. Quite scarce in this condition. The story is accompanied by illustrations by M.J. Burns. Sisson & Walker's entry for this title states that it is "Complete in St. Nicholas, v. 29" when in fact the beginning of the magazine version of the tale coincides with the opening of Chapter VIII in the published book. It would be more accurate to call this a digest version. (Woodbridge #10, Sisson & Walker #3).

London, Jack. The Cruise of the Dazzler (St. Nicholas Magazine for Young Folks, Volume XXIX, Number 9). The Century Company, Union Square, New York, 1902.

Price: US$800.00 + shipping

Description: In Very Good+ condition. Oversized cream-colored wraps printed in orange and black. Pps. 770 - 863 of volume XXIX. This magazine is in excellent, clean condition with a few faint specks and with modest wear at the spine-ends and at the edges of the wraps. The text is quite clean and bright; no previous ownership markings. The binding is sound. Published in July of 1902, this magazine which includes an abridgement of 'The Cruise of the Dazzler,' (twenty-eight pages with double-columns of text), actually preceeded the hardcover first edition by three months (Century would publish the book in October of that year under the St. Nicholas books imprint). This is part of the magazine's series of long-stories-complete-in-one-issue. A rare and intriguing item for the London collector, being the first publication of his first novel (following early collections of short stories). ".Joe Bronson, dissatisfied and unhappy in school, decides to run away to sea. He falls in with the infamous 'bay pirates,' those some-time fishermen and oyster dredgers who, in reality, used their boats as convenient transport to rob business along the San Francisco bay at the turn of the century. It is readily and quite soon apparent to Joe that perhaps school isn't quite so bad after all; and after befriending 'Frisco Kid,' another young member of the crew they finally are able to cast off the shackles to 'French Pete,' the captain of the Dazzler and restart their lives." London, Jack [Chaney, John Griffith]. The Cruise of the Dazzler. The Century Co., New York, 1902.

Price: US$4500.00 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: A Near Fine to Fine copy of the first edition, apparently otherwise unknown, second issue or printing, with an updated title page not showing the publication date but with the colophon to the title page verso still showing the Publication Date of 1902 (with the "2" badly typed in a manner quite like that in the first edition, first printing, first issue as shown in Sisson and Martens London Bibliography, and with the rest of the type perfect as compared to the colophon type appearing in the first edition, first printing, first issue), in a Very Good or better dust jacket. Also, as in the first edition, first printing, first issue, the illustrations appear first as the frontispiece and show the remainder of them on later, unnumbered pages [95], [121], [151], [185], and [217]. Pages [96], [122], [152], [186], [218] are blank. The book wears it's RARE Very Good + dust jacket (with a small damaged area to the spine but otherwise in Fine condition) and shows advertising for "Adventure Isle" a 1926 work by George Allan England on the rear flap. Neither BAL nor Sisson mentions any later printings or editions after the first edition, first printing, first issue by The Century Company. [BAL does list a Hodder & Stoughton printing in London (1906) as well as a Mills & Boon printing, also in London (1915)]. Thus, it appears to us that the Publisher found some unsold copies of the first edition, first printing, first issue, updated the title page entirely in black, and added a dust jacket -- which jacket in main copied the first edition, first printing, first issue jacket, but with updated advertising -- thus creating a first edition, second or later issue, in a later dust jacket which in primary part followed the design of the first edition, first issue dust jacket. "The Cruise of the Dazzler" is Jack London's fourth book and his DEBUT JUVENILE NOVEL, his second juvenile novel being "Dutch Courage" (The Macmillan Company, 1922). Copies of the first edition, first printing, first issue are rather uncommon and copies in the first edition, first printing, first issue dust jacket are RARE TO THE MARKET AND COMMAND A SUBSTANTIAL PRICE. THIS ISSUE IN THIS DUST JACKET IS OF EQUAL OR GREATER RARITY BUT CAN BE BOUGHT AT A MORE AFFORDABLE PRICE. A RARE COPY INDEED. First Edition [possible second issue or printing].
