Description: In the late 1930s, sixteen-year-old Billy Parham captures a she-wolf that has been marauding his family's ranch. But instead of killing it, he decides to take it back to the mountains of Mexico. With that crossing, he begins an arduous and often dreamlike journey into a country where men meet ghosts and violence strikes as suddenly as heat-lightning?a world where there is no order "save that which death has put there."An essential novel by any measure, The Crossing is luminous and appalling, a book that touches, stops, and starts the heart and mind at once.

Condition: Very Good

Description: The second volume in the author's Border Trilogy. Stated first edition. First printing with correct full number line sequence. A clean copy with no writing, marks, underlining, or bookplates. No remainder marks. Spine is tight and crisp. Boards are flat and true, and the corners are square. This book would be graded much higher were it not for some minor moisture issues along the upper textblock edge. This has caused some staining (black/blue, from the boards) that has crept into the first few pages for about 1/4" or so. The upper textblock edge (maroon) shows a few areas of water drops. However there is no associated puckering or other damage with this staining. The jacket also has some staining, mostly to a 2" area on the upper left corner of the front cover that can only be seen when the jacket is removed. The boards have faded a bit in this general area as well. Dust jacket is not price-clipped and shows moderate wear/scuffing, including a 1/4" tear along the upper spine. The dust jacket is also lacking the 1/4" white border that is supposed to run along the bottom, perhaps from a cutting error, though the jacket is still properly sized. Despite these flaws this remains a desirable copy that will look great on any bookshelf! This collectible, very good, first edition/first printing copy is protected with an archival mylar dust jacket cover. Satisfaction guaranteed!

Condition: Very Good

Description: The second volume in the author's Border Trilogy. Stated first edition. First printing. A clean copy with no writing, marks, underlining, or bookplates. No remainder marks. Spine is tight and crisp. Boards are flat and true, and the corners are square. This book would be graded much higher were it not for some moisture damage. This manifests in some staining (black/blue, from the boards) along portions of the lower 1/2" of the endpapers and a few back pages. The water has caused a kind of "halo" browning effect to the front and rear endpapers and has generally puckered the entire textblock. The boards are a bit faded toward the lower edges near the spine because of the moisture but have otherwise retained their color and shape. Dust jacket is not price-clipped but also has moisture stains which extend about 2" up from the lower edge. However this can only be seen when the jacket is removed. There is also a small (1" x 1/4") area of goop on the upper right front cover. Otherwise there is only mild wear/scuffing but no tears. Certainly not a perfect copy, but it remains desirable and would look great on any bookshelf, especially for this price! This collectible, very good, first edition/first printing copy is protected with an archival mylar dust jacket cover. Satisfaction guaranteed!

Condition: Very Good

Description: The second novel in the author's Border Trilogy. Stated first edition. First printing. No writing, marks, underlining, or bookplates. No remainder marks. Spine is tight and crisp. Boards are flat and true, and the corners are square. The book itself appears unread and would be graded much higher were it not from some moderate moisture staining (black/blue, from the boards). This staining is most evident on the lower inch or so of the endpaper gutters and the lower textblock edge. The staining has not really crept into the pages, and there is only the slightest bit of puckering to a very small section of the last 20 pages or so. The boards are hardly affected, with only the slightest hint of fading in the affected areas. Also the maroon coloring to the upper textblock edge has lightened a bit. Dust jacket is not price-clipped and would also be graded much higher were it no for water stains as well. The staining on the jacket has crept up the spine about 2" or so and extends down about midway into the front and back cover. The staining is only visible when the dust jacket is removed and has not otherwise affected the cover. Other than that the dust jacket shows only minor wear/scuffing, the worst of which is a 1/4" tear along the lower edge of the front cover. These flaws only serve to make this modern classic a more affordable addition to your collector's library! This collectible, very good, first edition/first printing copy is protected with an archival mylar dust jacket cover. Satisfaction guaranteed!

Price: US$125.00 + shipping

Description: First edition. Volume Two of the Border Trilogy. 8vo. Fine copy in dust jacket. "The Crossing concerns a young American rancher living near the Mexican border in the 1930s, a time when the old West is grudgingly entering the modern world while Mexico is being torn apart by revolution. And like volume one's memorable hero, John Cole Grady, 16-year-old Billy Pawson is drawn south in a nearly mythical journey to find himself. Billy initially crosses into Mexico to take a wolf he had trapped on his New Mexico ranch back to the animal's native mountains. When he returns, he finds that his home has been plundered, and he and his 14-year-old brother set off for Mexico to find their family's stolen horses. Traveling through the lawless ruins of the post-revolutionary Mexican countryside, they encounter Gypsy wanderers, carnival actors, horse-traders, horse thieves, revolutionary soldiers, and men of various religions. All offer sage advice about the journey, and Billy's failure to heed their wisdom sometimes has horrifying results." This is the story of how a teenage boy's well-intentioned folly ruins his life and destroys his family. And despite those who would try to set Billy Parham upon the right and true path, life throws up too many impassable obstacles.

McCarthy Cormac. THE CROSSING. Volume Two The Border Trilogy. New York Alfred A. Knopf 1994, 1994.

Price: US$214.50 + shipping

Description: First Edition, first printing. 8vo, publisher’s original cloth backed boards, in the original illustrated dustjacket. 426 pp. A fine copy in a fine dustjacket, light mellowing to the dustjacket. FIRST EDITION. The second installment in McCarthy’s famed "Border Trilogy" which also included "All the Pretty Horses’ and ‘Cities of the Plain’. THE CROSSING is the initiation story of 16 year old Billy Parham and his younger brother Boyd. The novel, set just before and during World War II, is structured around three border crossings from New Mexico into Mexico. Each trip tests Billy as he must try to salvage something once he fails in his original goal. On both his first and last quest he is reduced (or perhaps exalted) to some symbolic futile gesture in his attempt, against all obstacles, to maintain his integrity and to be true to his moral obligations. This novel explores such issues as guilt, the acquisition of wisdom, heroism, and the crucial importance of stories.

Price: US$1850.00 + shipping

Description: First edition of the second book in the author's acclaimed Border Trilogy. Octavo, original half cloth. Signed by Cormac McCarthy on the title page. Additionally signed three times by jacket illustrator Chip Kidd, on the front free endpaper, on the front panel and on the rear jacket flap. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Jacket design by Chip Kidd. In The Crossing, Cormac McCarthy fulfills the promise of All the Pretty Horses and at the same time give us a work that is darker and more visionary, a novel with the unstoppable momentum of a classic western and the elegaic power of a lost American myth. In the late 1930s, sixteen-year-old Billy Parham captures a she-wolf that has been marauding his family's ranch. But instead of killing it, he decides to take it back to the mountains of Mexico. With that crossing, he begins an arduous and often dreamlike journey into a country where men meet ghosts and violence strikes as suddenly as heat-lightning--a world where there is no order "save that which death has put there."
