Description: FIRST US EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, with 1858 to both title page & copyright page, plus 'treacherous' for 'ruddy' in line 3 of page 124. Contains the 12pp of ads at rear dated OCTOBER 1858. From Ahearn (2002): "4 printings in 1858, all had 'treacherous' for 'ruddy' in third line of page 124, so ads may determine [first state]. October 1858 is earliest" (as per this copy). The US edition was published shortly after the UK edition (both 1858). The UK edition preceded the US edition by a month, with ads dated January 1858, & was published in London by W. Kent & Co. Some copies of the first US edition have a tipped-in leaf at front for the Waverley novels (not in this copy). NOTE: Interestingly, this copy from the library of poet B.J. Leedom, with his ink signature to first blank (& dated "1858", the year of publication), plus his printed bookplate to front pastedown ("Belonging to the Library of B.J. Leedom, Bluffland, Germantown"). Benjamin Jones Leedom (1807-1883) was a contemporary of Longfellow. His volume "The Voyage to Harlem, Thirty Years Ago, and Other Poems" was published in Philadelphia in 1867. Both Longfellow & Leedom were born in 1807, & died a year apart (in 1882 & 1883 respectively). Also with additional former owner's bookplate to ffep. Electrotyped & printed by Metcalf & Company, Cambridge. Bound in publisher's original full brown cloth, with bright gilt lettering & horizontal blind-stamped rules to spine, all boards panelled in blind, including triple-ruled blind-stamped borders & blind-stamped floral decorations, brown-coated endpapers. Chips with small loss & wear to spine ends (notably 2cm x 0.5cm chip to head of spine), wear through to tips of boards, small gouge marks (insect damage?) to lower edge of book block (affecting lower margin edge of several pages), faint splash stain to two pages, otherwise despite the faults still a clean tight solid hardcover copy. 215pp + 12pp ads at rear. First US edition with interesting contemporary literary provenance. RARE.

Description: "THE COURTSHIP OF MILES STANDISH, AND OTHER POEMS", By/Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. London: W.Kent & Co. (Late D. Bogue), 86, Fleet Street, And Paternoster Row. MDCCCLVIII." First Edition, first issue. Pages viii, 136 [paginated 2-135]. NOTE: THIS COPY WAS REBOUND EARLY IN 3/4 LEATHER AND MARBLED BOARDS. Unfortunately it was rebound (as was common with wraps) minus the front and rear covers and minus the Four page publisher's catalogue bound in at rear.So basically the front and rear covers along with the 4-page book advertisement were left out leaving the front and rear end-papers, title page and the full poem which ends on page 135. The inside is actually very clean, tight, and complete and has been protected well from having the early rebinding. Proof that it is a first edition first issue is shown by the ink shadow on the back page which matches the original page of advertisement that followed page 135. I am able to provide a copy of the original covers and advertisements from another original copy that I have listed.
