Description: TRAVEN, B. The Cotton Pickers. London: Robert Hale. 1956. First English language edition. Trans. Eleanor Brockett. Originally published as The Wobbly in Germany in 1926, this is the elusive authors very first novel, written almost immediately after arriving in Mexico in 1924. A few years later, he would go on to write his most famous work, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, and by the time Hale published his first work here, Traven was a best-seller across Europe, in spite of or perhaps because of his highly elusive personality; Traven was a pseudonym for an unknown but probably German novelist who probably moved to and lived in Mexico for much of his adult life. A near fine book with a very gentle lean else fine, in a very good price-clipped dust jacket designed by P. & G. Dawson, with a few small nicks to the corners and at the spine head and tail, 2cm tear to top edge of rear panel.

Traven is one of the most mysterious figures of 20th-century literature. His true identity is still subject to much doubt. Although Traven claimed to be an American, his most famous works were first published in Germany during the 1920s and 1930s. Nothing definitive is known about Traven's beginnings. Never the less, Traven's novels have been translated into more than 30 languages and they have sold more than 25 million copies.

Description: A first edition of this novel attributed to B Traven. B Traven was the pen name of a novelist whose real name, nationality and details of biography are unknown. Little is known of the author aside from the fact he spent many years in Mexico where this book is set. While there are manyy theories as to the true identity of B Traven, nothing has been conclusively proven. It is widely believed that Traven is Ret Marut, a German stage actor and anarchist, however Marut denied being Traven, and remains only the best guess. In a black cloth binding in the unclipped dustwrapper. Externally, in lovely condition. Boards are slightly cocked. Dustwrapper smart with some light chipping and very slight loss to the head of the spine. Handling marks to the wraps and spotting to the inside of the wraps. Internally, firmly bound.
