The jacket is chipped and torn to edges with a small tear to top front and a longer tear to the bottom front (repaired). Small area to head and heel of spine missing and the remains of a small label to front. Now in clear protective covering. Apart from Broomsticks, a book of stories for children, this is the first collection of short stories that Mr de la Mare has published since' The Riddle'. All the stories contained in it have been written during the last two years. These tales of true enchantment are manifestly the work of a poet who is also an acknowledged master of prose. Indeed Mr de la Mare can truthfully be credited with the invention of a new genre of short story in which the curious ineffable atmosphere that, suggested rather than conveyed, surrounds each story, is all-important. From the common place setting of city teashop or country tap-room one passes, almost without perceptible change, to the realm of high romance in which strange inexplicable events may happen. Always present are that delicate artistry and sure sense of the beauty of phrase that lend distinction and charm to everything that Mr de la Mare writes. Of the stories included in this volume, 'Mr Kempe' and 'Pretty Poll' have appeared serially in the London Mercury and 'The Wharf' in the Queen.

Lovecraft, who in his classic study Supernatural Horror in Literature remarked that "he is able to put into his occasional fear-studies a keen potency which only a rare master can achieve", especially praising his short stories "Seaton's Aunt", "The Tree", "Out of the Deep", "Mr Kempe", "A Recluse" and "All Hallows", along with his novel The Return.
