Description: Size of binding: 2 1/2" x 3 7/8"; advertisement page for Stothard/Walton's Angler; titlepage, xvi, 314 pp. (with second titlepage for Cotton work at p. 226) + (4)pp. with Note A & B and Index with "Printed by Thomas White" at bottom of page. Several small woodcut illustrations of fish in the text. Height of page: 3 1/2". Rebound at a later date with edges not trimmed down from the original binding. Binding from the 1890-1920 period features gray, ribbed and watered silk over boards, with a red/brown morocco leather title label with gilt titling, mounted on the spine. Silk shows a little age-related tanning. Yellow/tan glazed paper (later) endpapers. Text is generally clean & unspotted, book edges show age-related darkening. Scan shows the binding. A fairly well-preserved copy of this near-miniature edition, whose "Diamond" type is quite sharp and readable.

Engraved frontispiece and title page, with woodcuts of fishes in the text. 48mo (60 x 100 mm), pp. [iii]-314, [4]. In original cloth with paper spine label. Label with small chip, browned and slightly rubbed. With bookseller's ticket of Slatter & Rose Oxford. A little slight sunning to boards, a little browning to free endpapers, otherwise a very good, partially unopened, copy. One of the most desirable of Pickering's Diamond Classics. William Pickering began his career as a bookseller and then turned to publishing in the late 1810s. In 1821 he began issuing the popular series of "Diamond Classics," miniature books set in tiny 4.5 point type and offered in a cloth or leather binding at an affordable price of six shillings. Ouvrage illustré en noir et en hors texte d'un joli frontispice représentant les trois protagonistes du livre (Piscator, Auceps et Venator), d'une page de faux-titre gravée, de bandeaux de tête de titre et de nombreux dessins de poissons dans le texte. Reliure romantique de l'époque, plein veau noir maroquiné, plats ornés en doré d'une frise florale d'encadrement, coupes avec roulette dorée, dos titré et orné de grands fers dorés. +++++++ Rare et jolie édition anglaise dans un petit format proche du minuscule et dans une reliure romantique, de cet ouvrage de référence comprenant les textes de Izaak Walton (1593-1683) et Charles Cotton (1630-1685) : The Complete Angler, or the Contemplative Mans Recreation (en français Le Parfait Pêcheur à la ligne). C'est un traité écrit pendant 10 ans et publié en 1653, puis complété par Charles Cotton en 1676. C'est au moment de la retraite qu'Isaac Walton quitte définitivement Londres pour se retirer dans le Staffordshire, et se consacrer uniquement à l'écriture et à la pêche. C'est au cours de ses parties de pêche sur la Dove qu'il rencontre Charles Cotton, dont il devient inséparable. Si Charles Cotton est considéré comme le père de la pêche à la mouche moderne, Izaac Walton est celui qui lui en a donné sa dimension philosophique. Loeuvre aborde le thème de la pêche à la ligne sous la forme dun dialogue entre plusieurs personnages, et se présente comme une succession de conseils ou dastuces visant à assurer au lecteur la meilleure pêche possible. Le dialogue, qui a lieu au bord de la Lee River près de Londres, oppose au départ Piscator, Auceps et Venator, prenant respectivement le parti de la pêche, de la fauconnerie et de la chasse. La confrontation verbale tourne rapidement au bénéfice du pêcheur, qui parvient à réduire le fauconnier au silence et même à convaincre le chasseur de se mettre à la pêche. Au-delà des multiples conseils touchant les rivières les plus poissonneuses, les qualités respectives des mouches artificielles ou les différentes espèces de poissons, louvrage est avant tout resté célèbre en raison de son atmosphère très particulière, faite de sérénité et de communion spirituelle avec la nature. C'est une approche élitiste qui associe réflexion philosophique, religiosité, sentiment d'appartenace à la Nature et environnementalisme. Le traité offre par ailleurs un fort aspect religieux de par ses multiples références à la divine Providence, et constitue un excellent portrait de lAngleterre rurale de lépoque pour les historiens Reliure en bon état, 2/4 coins et coiffes avec de très légers frottements, dorures lumineuses et intérieur particulièrement frais, bel exemplaire.
