Description: Quarto quarter vellum and green cloth. With lovely gilt motifs to the spine and front. TEG. Page fore edges are untrimmed. 245 & 243 pp. With an abridgment of the Lives of the Authors by Sir John Hawkins. #163/350. Frontispiece portraits of the authors to each volume. With fifty-three illustrations, many on Japon paper. Printed on Dickinson's hand-made paper. The original 4-page prospectus is laid in loose. There is staining along the lower spine area of each volume and the extreme lower front edge of volume one. The corners are bumped. Bump to the upper spine of volume one. Toning to the endpapers. In the very scarce original cloth dust jackets, lettered in gilt on the spines. The spines are darkened, lightly soiled. Some wear, small tears to the spine ends. Light wear to the corners. There is staining to the lower spines that matches that of the books although it is largely visible only to the underside. The prospectus has some chipping along the fore edge. ; Small 4to 9" - 11" tall

The thick card slipcase is covered in the same green cloth as the DJs and the boards of the binding, the title in gilt and imprint is on the short edge rather than on spine backed edge, a few old marks to the cloth. This edition is edited with notes from a naturalist's point of view J.E.Harting who was librarian of the Linnean Society. It was edited and expanded by Walton for over a quarter of a century. The work is a celebration of fishing through prose and verse. Limited edition, this set is numbered forty-seven of three-hundred and fifty copies produced. Provenance: The Library of Colin and Joan Deacon. In the smart publisher's quarter vellum bindings. To this edition a large selection of additional footnotes have been added regarding the bibliographical history of the work, and the author's own sources.
