We will find on the first flyleaf of the first volume a handwritten inscription signed by the hand of George E. Woodberry dated 1892. Our 8 volumes are in good condition or better; complete and solidly bound but showing some yellowing of the spines as well as some small surface rubbing on the title pieces (also a few light stains). The boards are fine showing only occasional small, fairly discreet stains. The interiors are in excellent condition EXCEPT for the endpapers where the glue used to glue them seems to have oxidized, thus browning the paper and transmitting this browning to the ffeps. This characteristically lavish Gilded Age edition was published on the occasion of Shelley's centenary; the large paper issue was divided into eight volumes rather than the four of the trade issue. The editor George Edward Woodberry (1855-1930) was "a hearty admirer of Shelley, and unsurpassed in America as a literary scholar and critic" (The Publishers' Weekly, 24 September 1892). As professor of comparative literature at the Columbia university, Woodberry "enjoyed extraordinary success, being repeatedly voted the most effective and respected teacher by undergraduate and graduate students alike" (ANB). He was also the author of important works on Poe, including Edgar Allan Poe (1885), which "presented more soundly researched information than any previous study" (ibid), and a complete edition of the works in 1894-95. 8 volumes, octavo (215 x 142 mm). Contemporary green morocco, spines with gilt dotted raised bands, titles and elaborate gilt decoration in compartments, covers panelled in gilt, inner frame with floral gilt tooling, turn-ins and blue morocco doublures correspondingly panelled and enclosing delicate gilt ornaments, white silk moiré free endpapers, top edges gilt, others untrimmed. Engraved portrait frontispiece with tissue guard in vol. I, half-titles and title pages printed in red and black with publisher's woodcut device to the former. Spines and board edges uniformly faded to brown, hint of shelfwear to bottom edges, subtly recoloured, toning to binder's blanks, otherwise internally bright and clean.
