Description: lviii, 416pp. With an engraved frontispiece, a further 13 engraved plates, and 76 engraved head- and tail-pieces. Bound by Hayday in contemporary gilt-tooled green morocco, A.E.G. A trifle rubbed, spine lightly sunned. Armorial bookplate of 'Sir Mervyn Ll. Peel' to FEP, occasional spotting/offsetting. A handsomely bound copy of Walton and Cotton's preeminent celebration of the art and spirit of fishing in prose and verse, first published in 1653. James Hayday (1796-1872), bookbinder. In 1825 Hayday became one of the auditors of the Journeymen Bookbinders' Trade Society. In 1833 he rented premises at 31 Little Queen Street, Lincoln's Inn Fields, where he continued until his retirement in 1861 at which time he sold the use of his name to William Mansell, who succeeded to the bookbinding establishment. An innovative craftsman, Hayday maintained that printed books ought to open freely and lie flat. To achieve this, and to obviate the disfigurement of the grain of the leather caused by the repeated opening of traditionally bound books, Hayday introduced the cross or pin-headed grain (i.e. Turkey morocco). He sewed books fully along every sheet, a method that caused additional thickness that he remedied by sewing with silk, rather than thread. Furthermore, he dispensed with the customary paper backing, instead directly fastening the leather cover. Sir Mervyn Lloyd Peel (1856-1929), Conservative politician who held the offices of Deputy Lieutenant and Justice of the Peace. Size: 8vo

Description: A smart copy of the second Major edition of Walton's 'Complete Angler', from the library of the 3rd Earl of Spencer and his deceased wife. The second Major edition.Bookplate of Esther Acklom to the front paste down. Though Acklom died before the publication of this edition, her husband was devoted to her and mourned her until his death almost three decades later, wearing mourning clothes, and a locket containing Acklom's hair until he died.Esther Acklom was an heiress and socialite, known for her social flirtations preceding her marriage to John, the future Earl Spencer, in 1814. Initially the pair were unwilling to marry, but the marriage proved to be a happy one. Esther married John after turning down many other marriage proposals, and breaking off two engagements. Acklom sadly died in 1818 after giving birth to a stillborn son.Two parts in one, the first part written by Izaak Walton, the second by Charles Cotton.Illustrated with a frontispiece, and twelve plates.Collated, complete.'The Compleat Angler' is a well known seventeenth century work celebrating the art and spirit of fishing, in both prose and verse. The work was admired by the likes of Charles Lamb, who admired it for it's innocence and simplicity of the heart. In fact it is so popular that it is the second most reprinted book in English after the King James Bible.Walton's writing is vivid and expands further than being just a fishing manual, with passages of rich description, such as describing the contents in the bag of an angler.Izaak Walton is now best known for this work, though he professed to not be an expert with a fishing fly. He also wrote a collection of short biographies called 'Walton's Lives'.With contributions by Charles Cotton, a poet, who is best known for these contributions, and for his translations of the works of Michel de Montaigne.Faded ink inscription to the title page, 'Alex Davis . from his Father, 1839'. In a rebacked mottled calf binding. Externally, smart. Minor bumping to the extremities. Bookplate to the front paste down. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean with some scattered spots, including to the plates. Faded ink inscription to the title page. Page 103/104 and the plate facing page 104 are working loose. Oliver 23; Coigney 25. ◆Isolated small marginal spots, other trivial imperfections, but AN EXTREMELY FINE COPY--clean, fresh, and bright internally, and the lustrous binding entirely unworn. With its appealing binding, charming illustrations, extensive notes, and beautiful condition, this is an extremely desirable copy of Walton's beloved classic. Walton (1593-1683) lived in turbulent times, and he suffered personal tragedy (he endured the deaths of both his wives and eight of his nine children), but, largely because of the present work, he is forever identified with quietude and serenity. First published in 1653, his "Compleat Angler" is the classic work on the art of angling, infused with wise fish lore, written by an indomitable angler who knew every haunt of fresh water fish in the south of England. But, as Day says, "the love of angling is only the outward sign of a gentle inward grace, the soul of a thoroughly good man who loves peace and quiet meditation. If any one man created the idyll of the English countryside, it was Walton. The modern reader may shake his head at Walton's complete absence of 'social consciousness' and the perplexing conundrums of men and life; but the headshaking is ultimately stilled by the naïve genius who evokes with all the charm of an old woodcut an England of sweet streams, smiling fields, cheery taverns, and unshakable faith in God and His wonderful world." The present copy comes from an important edition, being the first issued by John Major (1782-1849). It includes "the notes of all previous editors carefully revised and amended" (Oliver) and was lavishly illustrated by some of the best artists of the day, including Huysman and Lely. The notes were ably edited by Richard Thomson (1794-1865), Librarian of the London Institution and respected scholar. The attractive binding captures the tranquility of the work beautifully, and the accomplished workmanship is characteristic of the Bayntun Bindery of Bath, founded in 1894 and now the last of the great Victorian trade binderies still in family ownership.
