First Smith edition in the original boards rebacked in appropriate brown paper with white printed paper label. lx, 386 pages [including 5 pages of publisher's adverts] Portrait frontis., vignette title + 14 plates (all as called for) bound after the sixty pages of introduction though each has in pencil the instructions for where the plates should be bound. Inner hinge strengthened with binder's tape. Boards are soiled, and worn to edges, ownership signature, occasional foxing otherwise a clean and sound copy of this edition which is often referred to as "The Gosden Edition" as his imprint is on some of the plates but not published under his name.

Illustrated throughout with engravings. Neat ink inscr. (Eton College) to ffep & dated 1827. Of special interest to Walton collectors will be the loosely inserted 1820s authenticated copy of Izaak Walton's baptism certificate (1593) signed (original signature) by the Rector of St Mary's Parish Church, Stafford, Graham Edward Coldwell.
