Description: 8vo, pp [6, adverts], lvi, xxii, 304, [1], xlviii, iv, ii, iv,128, [6,index], separate title to second part, 2 engraved frontispieces including portrait in part 2, 14 engraved plates including music, engraved text illustrations, bound in contemporary calf, an early reback with raised bands, red label and fish ornament tooling, SECOND HAWKINS EDITION, an attractive and popular 18th century edition, this a re-issue of the 1760 printing of Thomas Hope with cancel title page. Though a common enough book this is a unique copy with three advertisement leaves at the front. One of these relates to books printed for R Withy, whose name appears in the imprint of this edition only and largely promotes, in some detail, a translation fo Theevenot's 'The Art of Swimming' [1764, though no Withy edition is recorded], useful perhaps for the careless angler. Also of interest is Withy's advert for 'The New Impenetrable Secret' a set of puzzle cards based upon Samuel Richardson's novels [1760, Sale 47, quoting the London Chronicle advert].Of more relevance to the Walton and Cotton is a double page advert directed 'To all Lovers of Angling. Onesimus Ustonson (April 1736 – after 1783) was an English manufacturer of fishing tackle. He invented the multiplying reel, and supplied fishing tackle to the naturalist Joseph Banks for the second voyage of James Cook, 1772–1775. The firm of Ustonson went on to become Royal Warrant holders to three successive British monarchs. imus Ustonson.at the [ with his large crown and fish woodcut logo], advertising all kinds of fishing tackle and equptment in some detail, including 'Kirby's Hooks' which are advertised on the facing leaf [cut to blank top and bottom], dated 1768 declaring Charles Kirby's 'engagement with Mr Ustonson.' These two leaves clearly came together though they are recorded separately in ESTC, the second BL only, the first BL and 2 other locations - one bound up with a 1760 Hawkins Upper board detached, lightly foxed to index leaves at the end, else a sound copy.
