Description: One of 600 copies printed by D. B. Updike. Original publisher's gray-brown paper-covered boards backed with dark brown cloth. Gilt lettering and decorations on spine. Green pattern of fishermen and shrubs printed on boards. Top edge stained dark green. 5" x 7 1/4." 324 pages, complete. Pages are very clean and intact except for light age toning throughout and darkened edges. Covers are very clean and intact except for slight rubbing and browning to front and back. Binding is tight. A Near Fine copy. Izaak Walton's famous homage to the art of fishing in verse and prose. Introduction by Bliss Perry (1860-1954), an American literary critic, author, and editor. Decorations by William Addison Dwiggins (1880-1956), an American type designer, book designer, and calligrapher. This edition was printed by D. B. Updike of the Merrymount Press in Boston. Daniel Berkeley Updike (1860-1941) was an American printer, historian of typography, and part of the Arts and Crafts movement. He founded the Merrymount Press in 1896. The Merrymount Press became well-known for its high-quality printing and designs and was highly regarded in the printing and publishing communities. The Merrymount Press was active until 1949. Back colophon: "Of this Edition of The Complete Angler six hundred copies have been printed by D. B. Updike, The Merrymount Press, Boston in the Month of April 1928."
