First thus, the first edition of this illustrated set from The Bodley Head. With twenty four full page plates across the two volumes and dozens of decorative vignettes, illustrated by the eminent English illustrator Frank C Pape. Francois Rabelais was a major French renaissance writer. He has historically been regarded as a fantasy and satirical writer. He is best known for his pentalogy of novels Gargantua and Pantagruel, which can be found to the first volume of this two volume set. This edition is Sir Thomas Urquhart's translation of Rabelais. Urquahart was best known for this translation, despite translating many other works. In original black cloth with pictorial gilt stamping, in scarce original black unclipped dustwrappers. Externally, lovely condition. Dustwrappers are very smart with minor bumping to extremities and small tears to head and tail of spines. Small loss to bottom of spine to volume I's dustwrapper and a small hole toward the bottom of the spine to volume II's dustwrapper. Internally, both volumes are firmly bound.
