The Compleat Angler was first published in 1653, but Walton continued to add to it for a quarter of a century causing it to expand from 13 to 21 chapters, and to be published in five editions during Walton's lifetime. The additional chapters on fly-fishing in the river Dove were added by Walton's close friend Charles Cotton (1630 - 1687), an English poet, translator of Montaigne, and writer. Douglas W. Gorsline 1913-1985) was an American painter, illustrator, and writer. His line-engravings for 12 plates and 40 washes were used in The Complete Angler published by the Limited Editions Club. That edition served as the basis for this Heritage Press edition. THE COMPLETE ANGLER is considered a classic celebration of the art and spirit of fishing in prose and verse.
