Description: A beautifully bound copy of The Compleat Angler. In a morocco binding by Bumpus Ltd. of Oxford as indicated by binder's stamp to front pastedown. With the bookplate of one Vincent Cartwright Vickers to the front pastedown. Vickers was of Newsells Park, Royston, Hertfordshire, which was a country house and estate. The house has a history of race horses and today is a horse stud farm. The bookplate possibly belongs to the same Cartwright Vickers that wrote The Google Book, an illustrated book of children's verse. With the Angler's calendar to the rear of the work. This work is edited and with an introduction by Richard Le Gallienne. Illustrated throughout by Edmund H New. The Compleat Angler was first published in 1653 but went through several alterations and additions. It is a celebration of art and spirit of fishing in prose and verse. In a full crushed morocco binding with gilt stamped detailing to board edges and to spine. Externally, excellent with minor shelfwear to the head and tail of spine. Fading to spine and board edges as expected with this colour. Binder's stamp to front pastedown, Bumpus Ltd. Prior owner's bookplate to front pastedown, Vincent Cartwright Vickers. The classic fishing book handsomely bound by Kiernan (1922-1967). He died at age 45, very well-esteemed in the trade but obscure; his bindings are very rare. The text taken from the fifth edition, the last edition with Walton's own revisions.
