This is the most popular of Eliot's seven plays in his lifetime, although his 1935 play, Murder in the Cathedral, is better remembered today. It focuses on a troubled married couple who, through the intervention of a mysterious stranger, settle their problems and move on with their lives. It was written when the author was a visiting scholar at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey in 1948. First performed at the Edinburgh Festival in 1949, the play had successful runs in London and New York, and won the 1950 Tony Award for Best Play. Description: Fine copy of a later issue of the 1st edition of TS Eliot's famous play of manners. Original cloth fine in fine dj under brodart mylar. Note signed boldly in ink on title page and dated by TS Eliot. This is after Eliot's Murder in the Cathedral, Eliot's most famous play, after his 1948 Nobel Prize for Literature. Note Betrand Russell met TS Eliot at Harvard in 1909, when TS was 20, and was so impressed with his vast and subtle intelligence, he wrote of him so memorably in his own autobiography.

Some offsetting to front and rear endpapers with outline of dustjacket flaps, which are lightly discolored. Faint discoloration to head of spine dustjacket with some shallow wear. Cloth over boards and internal leaves quite nice. $6,000.
