Thom, Adam (1802-1890). The Claims to the Oregon Territory Considered. Smith, Elder and Co, London, 1844.

Price: US$288.00 + shipping

Description: Thom was a British Crown judicial officer, and makes a very able argument in favor of British ownership of the Oregon Territory. He refutes the American claims advanced by Robert Greenhow in his 1840 Memoir of the Northwest Coast. This pamphlet was published in the thick of the Oregon boundary dispute. With the outbreak of war between the United States and Mexico in April 1846, the Americans could no longer afford the distraction and risk of a possible second war, and the Oregon question was finally settled along the 49th Parallel by the Oregon Treaty signed in June of 1846. Ref. WHALE 1508; HOWES T161. Unbound, tied with string. Octavo. iv, 44 pages

THOM, Adam (1802-1890).. The Claims to the Oregon Territory Considered. London: Smith, Elder and Co., 1844., 1844.

Price: US$360.00 + shipping

Description: 8vo., (8 4/8 x 5 4/8 inches). Title-page as front cover, stabbed and sewn as issued. First edition. Thom argues Robert Greenhow's American claims to the Oregon Territory, until then held jointly by both Britain and America. A renowned Francophobe, it was surprising when Thom was informally offered the newly created judicial post of recorder of Rupert's Land in Canada, then owned by the Hudson's Bay Company, in 1838. The position was a disaster, but while he was there, he did write this concise argument against American demands for control of the west coast of America, and other books. Howes T161; Smith 10183; Sabin 95370.
