Although called the "Roycroft Press" by latter-day collectors and print historians, the organization called itself "The Roycrofters" and "The Roycroft Shops"." (from Wikipedia); Signed by Author

(Hubbard, Elbert). So here then are the preachments entitled the city of Tagaste, and a dream and a prophecy, by Fra Elbertus.. (New York, Roycroft 1900)., 1900.

Price: US$206.12 + shipping

Description: Elbert Hubbard, here writing in the guise of ?Fra Elbertus?, was the president of the Roycrofters, a semi-communal society which became renowned as the leading Arts and Crafts press in the United States. Hubbard (1856-1914) had met William Morris in London in 1890, and, greatly impressed by him, set up his own press along the lines of Kelmscott. These two essays, the first a satire, Tagaste (an ancient Roman colony in what is now Algeria), a metaphor for New York, and the second a less obtuse criticism of capitalist society, typify the Roycrofters? scorn for everything factory-made, and for the cheapening of knowledge. Small 4to. (8)+21+(3)pp, incl. photogravure portrait frontis and decorative hand-coloured borders and colophon. Original boards, rebacked with recent calf spine. One of 940 numbered copies printed on handmade paper, this copy signed by the author and by the illustrator, Minnie Gardner, with her colour monogram. Gavin Stamp?s copy.
