Description: 1862 American first edition; no later dates or printings mentioned. This is a library re-bind in sturdy dark blue cloth with titles and Dewey Decimal number to spine. Book plate of the University of Chicago Library is overstamped "This book is no longer the property of . . ." to front pastedown, and the library page stampings are similarly overstamped and thus "canceled" to the closed page edges. Manila card holder to rear pastedown and there is a dampstain to the rear endpapers, only. The triple-folding map of travel routes to Salt Lake which is called for opposite Page One is complete but is in fact bound in at page 61, upside down, and with several tears having undergone long-ago repairs with clear tape. The triple-folding Plot map of Salt Lake City is laid in loose at pg. 193, which is where it ought to be. Tissue guard missing from frontispiece vista of Salt Lake City. Pages show occasional small dark spots but NO substantial staining or "foxing." Well-known world traveler and explorer Burton spent a month with the Mormons in and around Salt Lake, describing them more sympathetically than most authors of the time, then passed through Virginia City (where mining had begun in 1857 but the Big Bonanza was not to be struck till 1873) on his way across the Sierras to California. 574 pp. including index, lacking the final 2 pp. publisher's ads. Tissue protected frontispiece rendering of Great Salt Lake City as viewed from the north. Several illustrations, including some full page plates and foldout map. Good to good plus. Boards bear some edgewear and very minor rubbing. Pages and hinges are tight with sporadic minor staining and water damage, otherwise bright clean text and plates.Thick 8vo. pp. xii, 574 incl appendix and index, plus adverts. Sir Richard Francis Burton (1821 - 1890) was an English explorer, geographer, translator, writer, soldier, orientalist, cartographer, ethnologist, spy, linguist, poet, fencer, and diplomat. He was famed for his travels and explorations in Asia, Africa, and the Americas, as well as his extraordinary knowledge of languages and cultures. According to one count, he spoke 29 European, Asian, and African languages. Following his celebrated journeys to Mecca and Medina, Burton turned his attention to the American frontier, traversing Indian county en route to Salt Lake City where he embarked on characteristic detailed ethnographic studies --guardely favorable-- of the Mormons and met Brigham Young.
