Description: 2 vols., 12mos; iv, 286pp & [2], 238, [16pp Contents]; full panelled calf, gilt spines with red and black labels, a.e.g; in felt-lined two-compartment slipcase. Goldsmith's satirical letters ran in Newbery's Public Ledger, purporting to be dispatches home from an invented visitor. This copy with "Printed for the Author" on the title page, along with the following points of issue: misnumbered p. iv in Vol. 1, catchword on p. 11 in Vol. 2 with a letter out of line. A lovely set in a fine binding by Riviere. Elegant monogram bookplates; touch of rubbing to spine ends -- and adjacent wear to slipcase; cover bright, clean and unmarked.

Description: FIRST COLLECTED EDITION. 2 volumes, our copy with the following issue points, "Printed for the Author" on titlepage, page "vii" misnumbered "v" in volume 1 and the "i" in the catchword "mazing" on page 11 in volume 2 is out of alignment. Bound in early full speckled calf, raised bands, gilt lettered spines, head and foot of spine of volume 1 rubbed with some slight loss, hinges rubbed but covers firmly attached, text clean and bright throughout.

Printed for the Author and Sold by J. Newbery and W. Bristow in St. Paul's Church-yard, J. Leake and W. Frederick at Bath, B. Collins at Salisbury, and A. M. Smart and Co. at Reading. Previous owner's bookplate affixed to marbled endpapers in both volumes. Both volumes show very minor shelfwear to their boards, otherwise in very good condition! Interiors clean and bindings sound. RARE!
