Binding and hinges are strong and sound. Bright gilt page edges on top. Attractive, colorfully illustrated boards. Illustrations by A.B. Frost; all illustrations are present. pages and endpapers are clean. Backstrip shows a touch of darkened sun spots. Upper corner of interior front pastedown shows evidence of where a small bookplate was lifted. An attractive, tight and clean copy in VG+ condition. The story recounts the tribulations of a freed slave in the Deep South; and racial reconciliation after the Reconstruction era. The first chapter is titled "An Evening with the Ku-Klux." The title character is a holdover from the author's previous book "Plantation Pageants." Published ten years after the American folklorist first came to prominence with his collection of Uncle Remus stories. First edition, first printing. VG+

First Edition of this loosely-connected collection of eight tales of black Americans; the first is titled "An Evening with the Ku-Klux." Aunt Minervy Ann had been one of the principal characters of Harris's preceding book, PLANTATION PAGEANTS. This copy has the fore and bottom edges untrimmed, which according to Blanck is the "probable" second state. The volume's condition is very good-plus (spine slightly darkened, a trace of wear at the spine ends, front endpaper cracked). Blanck 7143. This copy is inscribed by Harris on the front free endpaper, "To Huel [?] -- | Joel Chandler Harris"
