Description: First English Edition. viii, 246 pp. Original decorative green cloth with gilt lettering (not the brown noted in Myers); all edges gilt. Wear to spine ends and corners, and light marks to boards. Stamp stating the book was a gift from the Red Cross to front pastedown. Occasional minor spots. Occasional minor splits to binding, but all together. Frontispiece and 43 wood engraved plate illustrations by Jules Ferat throughout. This appeared originally as 'Les Indes Noire' and under the title 'The Underground City' the following year in the US. Myers 10. The novel follows the fortunes of the mining community of Aberfoyle near Stirling, Scotland, with 'strange doings' happening underground in the vein of other Verne classics like 'Journey to the Centre of the Earth'. 8vo.
