[Butcher 53]. First appearing circa 1911 in a little-known magazine called "Orpheus," "The Chessplayer" describes a recurring, haunting dream using vivid language and Blake-like imagery. The two other essays, 'The Listener' and 'Penderyn' were hitherto unpublished. Philip Edward Thomas (1878 - 1917) was a British poet, essayist, and novelist. In 1915, he enlisted in the British Army to fight in the First World War and was killed in action during the Battle of Arras in 1917. He is commemorated in Poets' Corner, Westminster Abbey.
