Description: iv, 211, [1] p. 20 cm. Frontispiece, title page vignette, 37 other b&w plates. Frontispiece listed as being at p. 24. Most plates not at listed pages. Blue cloth with black, white, gold impressing. Embossed white dragon on front. Wrapped in mylar, removed for photos. Spine faded. Worn corners and spine ends. Ink inscriptions on front endpapers for Roger and Winchester Sherman. Frontispiece tissue guard loosening. Foxing and stains mainly to endpapers and first pages. Slightly roughened page edges. P. 13 detached. While this book is not as well known as "Twenty Thousand Leagues" or "Around the World," it is Verne at his best. The descriptions of the villagers, their costumes, lifestyles and belief in the supernatural make an interesting read on their own but, coupled with an exciting adventure story, this is fine reading indeed. Young readers might not have known what a "nyclatop" was but, if they saw one flapping its wings around a dark fortress in the Carpathians, they would run for it as does hero Nic Deck.
