Description: First edition, early printing ("nineteenth edition," so stated on copyright page). Orig. red cloth with gilt titles. Fine copy in near very good dust jacket with rather shallow chipping along the top edge of the front panel, the right side of the spine panel, and a bit along the top edge of the rear panel as well. The dust jacket states "20th Thousand" and this reveals that Lane was using the system often seen in German books for counting editions, i.e., by thousands. This brings into reasonable territory the seemingly enormous number of printings this book had. Set in Italy and said to have been inspired by Harland's friend, Frederic Rolfe (Baron Corvo). Very scarce in dust jacket in any printing.
