Description: 5 volumes in full leather (brown calf) with gold borders. Raised cords, gold letting on the spine. Page edges and endpapers marbled. Handsome 19th century bookplates on the inside front covers of all 5 volumes with the name Wm. Matthew Hale, and a shield and a heron's head. All 5 volumes have been professionally repaired to reinforce hinges & all have brown bookcloth visible at the endpapers. CCXXII + 122 pages in volume 1. Remaining volumes have: 354 -- 290 -- 348 -- and 296 pages. Wide margins, bindings tight, pages clean. Handsomely printed and attractive. Frontispiece engraving of the Canterbury Pilgrimage. Description: London: William Pickering, 1830. In Five Volumes, complete. The second of several Pickering editions (Kelly, 2004, 1830.4), the first was in 1822. Late nineteenth or early twentieth century crushed brown morocco, gilt-lettered and elaborately decorated, featuring an oak leaf and acorn device in a triple ruled frame on the spine, and green cloth boards, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. Illustrated with two plates in volume 1. "With an essay on his language and versification, an introductory discourse, notes, and a glossary by Tho. (Thomas) Tyrwhitt, Esq. (1730-1786)". William Pickering began as an antiquarian bookseller but soon began to publish fine literature - reprints and original works, distinguished by beautiful typography. He began to use the Aldine anchor and dolphin device in about 1830, and it is present here. Very little wear, spines a little sunned. Front board of v.1 neatly re-attached, else a Fine copy.

Marbled paper pastedowns. Scattered, mostly light, foxing. A few scuffs on leather, which otherwise is fresh, bright, attractive.
