Description: Farrah 1960B-67. Two taped 1 inch jacket tears, top edge lightly foxed, ink gift note on verso of front endpaper. 1930 Hard Cover. 180 pp. "Laura Pendleton rescues Nancy Drew and her friend Helen, who can't swim, when their rowboat capsizes during a sudden, severe storm on Moon Lake. The girls from River Heights befriend the orphaned Laura, who has come to the area to meet her new guardian, Jacob Aborn. Mr. Aborn seems somewhat boorish to the River Heights girls, and Nancy, upon returning home, receives a phone call from Laura, who is desperate to escape from her "evil" guardian. He expects her to do household chores and cook, which seems natural, but when he demands her furs and jewels, she calls Nancy for help. Laura escapes, and this leads Nancy back to the Aborn house, spying on a mysterious bungalow in the woods that he frequents. Nancy eventually enter the bungalow but is quickly hit on the head and knocked unconscious. However, when Nancy comes too, she soon exposes an imposter, who had intended to steal all of Laura's stocks and investments, as well as her jewels.

Carolyn Keene. The Mystery At Lilac Inn. Grosset & Dunlap, Publishers, 1930.

Price: US$30.00 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: The Mystery At Lilac Inn by Carolyn Keene was published by Grosset & Dunlap, Publishers, New York, in 1930. Not an ex-library copy, this 83-year-old, 5" X 7 3/8", 200-page offering is in just G- condition, thanks primarily, I'm guessing, to its being handled by scores, if not hundreds, of teens' eager hands over its 83 years. Still, it is not in that bad of shape, physically speaking. There is some staining of front and back endpapers from original glue as well as modest yellowing of text's pages. Fairly noticeable shelf wear is seen at top and bottom edges of volume's spine, in spots along bottom edge of front cover board, and at the four outer tips of boards. Random, light spotting is observed on both front and back cover boards, but the original blue surface coloring is never disturbed/broken. The string-type central binding is in use here, and some separation is seen between pages 44-45, 92-93, 108-109, and 124-125. And, finally, a couple previous owners' signatures, and a brief gift inscription are written on the two blank pages preceding the Frontispiece as well as near the top of the back paste down page. This, then, was the fourth installment in the now iconic mystery series, having been preceded in publication by The Secret of the Old Clock, The Hidden Staircase, and The Bungalow Mystery. In this adventure, Nancy plays an integral part in helping her school chum, Emily Crandall, recover her inheritance(some $40,000 worth of heirloom jewelry) after it disappears from a temporarily deserted table at the Lilac Inn, a quite popular eating place located on the outskirts of Nancy's home town, River Heights. OF SPECIAL NOTE: There are, as an added treat, some four full page, black and white, period Drawings by the talented, reliable R. H. Tandy, including this offering's Frontispiece. I was once again reminded, Reader, of how immensely readable/addictive these mysteries are, even if you're not a teenager! Thanks very much!!
