Description: [8], 146, [6] pages. Ink mark on fep. Plain endpapers. DJ has some wear, soiling, tears and chips. James Albert Michener (February 3, 1907 - October 16, 1997) was an American author of more than 40 books, most of which were fictional, lengthy family sagas covering the lives of many generations in particular geographic locales and incorporating solid history. Michener had numerous bestsellers and works selected for Book of the Month Club, and was known for his meticulous research behind the books. Michener's novels include Tales of the South Pacific for which he won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1948, Hawaii, The Drifters, Centennial, The Source, The Fires of Spring, Chesapeake, Caribbean, Caravans, Alaska, Texas, Space, and Poland. His non-fiction works include Iberia, about his travels in Spain and Portugal; his memoir The World Is My Home; and Sports in America. Return to Paradise combines fictional short stories with factual descriptions of the Pacific areas where they take place. In one of his beloved early bestsellers, Pulitzer Prize-winning author James A. Michener crafts a tale of the American men who fought the Korean War, detailing their exploits in the air as well as their lives on the ground. Young and innocent, they arrive in a place they have barely ever heard of, on a ship massive enough to carry planes and helicopters. Trained as professionals, they prepare for the rituals of war that countless men before them have endured, and face the same fears. They are American fighter pilots. Together they face an enemy they do not understand, knowing their only hope for survival is to win. Verso compared with photos of other stated First Edition/First Printing posted on line. Neither First Edition nor First Printing, nor other printing numbers are stated. Original $2.50 price intact atop the front flap.

Price: US$1288.26 + shipping

Description: First edition, first printing, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on half-title: "N.B.C. New York, N.Y., July 9, 1953, To Lovely Faye Emerson, on publication day of this modern novel. With appreciation. Jim Michener". As claimed by the dust jacket blurb, "here is a novel that will be called, and with justice, one of the masterpieces of war literature". Faye Emerson (1917-1983), the US film and stage actress, also hosted The Faye Emerson Show during the 1950s, when she was called the "First Lady of Television". Television listings in the New York Times for 9 July 1953 reveal that the evening saw both Faye Emerson broadcast on "Fashions and Interviews" and Michener appear on a programme named Author Meets the Critics. Set during the Korean War, and based on actual missions flown against railroad bridges in North Korea, the novel is about an operation undertaken by United States Navy pilots to destroy heavily protected bridges in enemy territory. The novel was the basis for a film of the same name, starring William Holden, Grace Kelly, and Mickey Rooney, released the following year. Octavo. Original dark and light blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt and silver, blue endpapers. With dust jacket. Extremities slightly sunned, minor foxing to edges; extremities of unclipped jacket worn with some minor loss, occasional abrasions: a very good copy in like jacket.
