Description: Near Fine book in VG- dust jacket. Dust jacket has shallow chipping at head and foot of spine and lower corner of front cover, now protected by fresh mylar sleeve. Book is inscribed on the half title page: "Say Loren: Read this "muy Pronto" -- it your etiquette Lessan on Bull Fite Conduct -- U must kno rules & regulations." (sic) This is followed by illegible initials. Sophia Loren was in Madrid in 1956 for the filming of her movie Pride and the Passion, which had some bullfighting scenes, so this book may have been a gift to her. I would like to believe that it was. . Tom Lea was both an artist and a writer, a son of El Paso, in the great state of Texas. He both wrote and wonderfully illustrated this classic bull-fighting novel, which some have said rivals Hemingway's Death in the Afternoon. This novel is the basis of the 1951 film of the same name, starring Mel Ferrer and Anthony Quinn. Directed and produced by Robert Rossen for Columbia Pictures. A solid and thought-provoking copy of an early printing. . 8vo 8" - 9" tall. 270 pages. J2

ROSSEN, ROBERT & TOM LEA. The Brave Bulls - A Novel by Tom Lea. Boston Little Brown 1949, 1949.

Price: US$850.00 + shipping

Description: Ninth printing. This was film director Robert RossenÕs copy used by him in creating the screenplay, and on set during filming, for his 1951 motion picture adaptation of the now classic Tom Lea novel. The book is heavily annotated in pencil throughout with many written words, sentences, and scorings written in RossenÕs hand. On the front of the cloth cover, Rossen, has written boldly written MY COPY in pencil. Very good with some fading to the spine and a minor dampstain to the cloth at the rear board in a very good dust jacket. The completed film stars Mel Ferrer and Anthony Quinn in what is considered to be one the finest films dealing with bullfighting which was beautifully photographed by Floyd Crosby and James Wong Howe on location in Mexico. Robert Rossen, one of HollywoodÕs distinguished directors came under intense scrutiny by the House On Un-American Activities Committee during the filming of The Brave Bulls with Rossen being subpoenaed to testify in 1951 the year of the filmÕs release. Columbia Pictures decided to issue the film with little publicity and then released Rossen from his contract.
