The dust jackets are protected from further wear by a Mylar sleeve. ************************************ ALL THE PRETTY HORSES: ***** "NATIONAL BOOK AWARD WINNER NATIONAL BESTSELLER The first volume in the Border Trilogy, from the bestselling author of The Passenger and the Pulitzer Prize winning novel The Road ***** All the Pretty Horses is the tale of John Grady Cole, who at sixteen finds himself at the end of a long line of Texas ranchers, cut off from the only life he has ever imagined for himself. With two companions, he sets off for Mexico on a sometimes idyllic, sometimes comic journey to a place where dreams are paid for in blood." ***** THE CROSSING: ***** "Following All the Pretty Horses in Cormac McCarthy's Border Trilogy is a novel whose force of language is matched only by its breadth of experience and depth of thought. ***** In the bootheel of NewMexico hard on the frontier, Billy and Boyd Parham are just boys in the years before the Second World War, but on the cusp of unimaginable events. First comes a trespassing Indian and the dream of wolves running wild amongst the cattle lately brought onto the plain by settlers -- this when all the wisdom of trappers has disappeared along with the trappers themselves. And so Billy sets forth at the age of sixteen on an unwitting journey into the souls of boys and animals and men. Having trapped a she-wolf he would restore to the mountains of Mexico, he is long gone and returns to find everything he left behind transformed utterly in his absence. Except his kid brother, Boyd, with whom he strikes out yet again to reclaim what is theirs thus crossing into 'that antique gaze from whence there could be no way back forever.' ***** An essentialnovel by any measure, The Crossing is luminous and appalling, a book that touches, stops, and starts the heart and mind at once." ***** CITIES OF THE PLAIN: ***** "NATIONAL BESTSELLER The third volume of the award-winning Border Trilogy, from the bestselling author of The Passenger and the Pulitzer Prize winning novel The Road A darkly beautiful elegy for the American frontier ***** The setting is New Mexico in 1952, where John Grady Cole and Billy Parham are working as ranch hands. To the North lie the proving grounds of Alamogordo; to the South, the twin cities of El Paso and Juarez, Mexico. Their life is made up of trail drives and horse auctions and stories told by campfire light. It is a life that is about to change forever, and John Grady and Billy both know it. ***** The catalyst for that change appears in the form of a beautiful, ill-starred Mexican prostitute. When John Grady falls in love, Billy agrees against his better judgment to help him rescue the girl from her suavely brutal pimp. The ensuing events resonate with the violence and inevitability of classic tragedy. Hauntingly beautiful, filled with sorrow, humor and awe, Cities of the Plain is a genuine American epic." ////////////////////////////////////// The above text was taken fr

Description: FIRST EDITIONS, with All the Pretty Horses and The Crossing signed and inscribed by McCarthy. Inscribed in ink on the half-titles of All the Pretty Horses: "For Darla / All best / Cormac McCarthy"; and The Crossing: "For Darla / All best wishes / Cormac McCarthy". All three volumes are from the recipient, with detailed letter of provenance (available upon request). "The completion of Cormac McCarthy's Border Trilogy - All the Pretty Horses (1992), The Crossing (1994), and Cities of the Plain (1998)--marked a major achievement in American literature. Only ten years earlier this now internationally acclaimed novelist had been called the best unknown writer in America. "The trilogy is McCarthy's most ambitious project yet, composed at the height of his mature powers over a period of fifteen years. It is 'a miracle in prose,' as Robert Hass wrote of its middle volume, an unsentimental elegy for the lost world of the cowboy, the passing of the wilderness, and the fading innocence of post-World War II America. The trilogy is a literary accomplishment with wide appeal, for despite the challenging materials in each book, these volumes remained on bestseller lists for many weeks." (Arnold and Luce, A Cormac McCarthy Companion). Note: The Crossing was also issued in a signed limited edition of 1000 copies with a tipped-in leaf signed by McCarthy (before binding). The copy in the present set is a much more desirable first trade edition where McCarthy actually signed the book. There was no signed limited edition issued for All the Pretty Horses. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1992-98. Octavo, original half black cloth, original dust jackets. Fine copies. Original cloth, original dust jacket

The perception of horses is extraordinary, and Jimmy Blevins will take a place as one of the great characters of American literature" (Peter Matthiessen).

Attractive set of McCarthy's critically acclaimed Border Trilogy – his first encounter with mainstream success after writing five novels between 1965-1985. Beginning with the publication of All the Pretty Horses, for the first time in McCarthy's career, his publisher poured a considerable amount of money into marketing the novel, with pre-publication copies in five formats (including an attractive signed advance in a folding case) produced and widely-circulated. Few signings events were done for the novel, after which McCarthy, publicity shy and committed to a private life, would seldom do public events or book signings, opting to sign sheets to be tipped-in to subsequent books. All the Pretty Horses won both the National Book Award and National Book Critics Circle Award in 1992, and served as the basis for Billy Bob Thorton's 2000 adaptation starring Matt Damon and Penelope Cruz.

Cormac McCarthy's award-winning and best-selling trio of novels, The Border Trilogy, constitutes a genuine American epic. The young men in these novels come of age on Southwestern ranches in the 1930's, while across the border, Mexico beckons them with its desolate beauty and the cruel promise of a place where dreams are paid for in blood. The San Francisco Chronicle calls the trilogy "An American classic to stand with the finest literary achievements of the century" and the Chicago Tribune exclaimed, "Make a place on your bookshelf. If you love classic narrative, quest stories, adventure stories of high order transformed by one of the lapidary masters of contemporary American fiction, now is your hour of triumph."

Description: This signed first edition set of Cormac McCarthy's The Border Trilogy is a must-have for any collector of rare and unique books. The cloth binding and 1st prints give this set a vintage and authentic feel. This particular set was published from 1992 to 1998 by Alfred A. Knopf and includes all three books in the trilogy. The books are all hand held and signed by Cormac McCarthy with inscriptions and amazing signatures that are 100% authentic as I have been buying and selling his signed books for many years now. Please do your own comparisons and you will see these are quite genuine. Important note, these are not tipped in signatures. Many examples on the market are examples of tipped in signatures. The signatures on tipped in pages are real yet McCarthy never held the books. He was simply sent blank sheets of paper he signed and returned to the book binder to be included into the books. This set is a rare example where he held each book, opened it to the appropriate page and wrote out an inscription as well as his signature. McCarthy granted only a handful of interviews in his career, never did public book signings, abhorred talking about writing and was very private and thus hand held and signed copies of his work are quite scarce. This set I put together over many years searching for the right copies. All The Pretty Horses - a first edition and first printing in VG + condition with some handling wear, some very slight toning and slightest softening to spine ends. Signed in black sharpie to Tom Cox. Jacket in about NF with trace edge wear and it is NOT price clipped. The Crossing - first edition and first printing - Fine book signed in black sharpie to American book dealer Gil Moody of Moody Books, fine jacket. Cities of the Plain - First edition and first printing - NF to Fine book with slightest handling wear and trace rubbing to boards but frankly it s not noticeable. A really nice example signed to Dwight in black Sharpie. Jacket about NF with ever so slight age toning. Not price clipped. . #cormacmccarthy #alltheprettyhorses #bloodmeridian #suttree #signedbooks #modernfirsteditions #signedfirsts #signedcormacmccarthy #bibliophile #rarebooks
