Description: Very good minus, limited edition book, no dust jacket. This is #329 out of 725. Signed by the author beneath his frontispiece photo. Blue paper covered boards with author's emblem stamped in red in the lower right corner of front board panel; white cloth covered spine with gilt-stamped lettering. Side and lower external page edges are untrimmed. Boards are sunned and soiled overall and with many small fox-like stains on the front panel. Spine lettering is legible in the right light. Upper edge at head of board spine is rubbed but not quite frayed. Lower edge at tail of board spine is creased; corners and edge is split and fraying. Front and back lower fore-edge corners are bumped and paper is split; upper front fore-edge corner is split. Previous owner's bookplate on front paste. Transfer and glue stains on front end-papers. Most internal text pages have some foxing but is generally limited to the small and fainter variety. Text block is snug. Publisher's quarter cream cloth over paper covered boards with Maugham's insignia in red to the upper cover, lettered gilt to spine. A very good copy with some fading to the boards. Portrait frontis of Maugham. This is the more common second state, printed on handmade cream paper. Just two copies were in the first state, printed on blue paper.

This is copy number 9 of 725 copies Signed by Maugham underneath his frontispiece portrait. Of the 725 copies, 700 were offered for sale. It seems a fair presumption that Maugham or the publisher would have retained the earliest numbered copies.
