The boards are subtly stained, and the pages are darkened. Flake/Draper 10081. Howes Y29. John Ray Young (1837-) was a nephew of Brigham Young. He was born in Kirtland, Ohio, to parents who were early followers of Joseph Smith. His father suffered greatly in the Missouri persecutions, being one of those who participated in the Crooked River Battle. John R. Young arrived in Salt Lake with the Jedediah M. Grant Company in October of 1847. He later served as company chaplain, as well as captaining a couple of his own companies assisting emigrants over the plains. Inscribed by John R. Young to Anton H. Lund, on a piece of paper that has been mounted to the front pastedown. The slip states, "Presented to President Anton H. Lund, in timidity- (?) that the little book will be interesting to you. And that Peace and Happiness will ever smile upon your path. Your brother, John R. Young." Anton Henrik Lund (1884-1921) was called as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in 1889, and in 1890 he succeeded Franklin D. Richards as Church Historian. Later, he served as First Counselor to two Presidents of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Joseph F. Smith and Heber J. Grant.
