Description: An historical adventure tale from Jeffrey Farnol scarce in a smart calf binding. Jeffrey Farnol, 1878-1952, was an English novelist. Often dismissed as a conventional writer, he has been judged to provide "a link between the major writers of the 19th century and the popular romancers of the present' (Henderson)" -ODNB. Later he was a consulting engineer in Western Australia, then Sydney. "Jack's geological work for Queensland is outstanding in both quality and quantity and remarkable for its accurate and detailed observation [.] In his last major publication, Northmost Australia, 2 vols (London, 1921), he gave detailed accounts of all the explorations of north Queensland, including his own. Many of his geological journeys were through unexplored country, especially Cape York Peninsula. On a journey in 1880 he was speared in a surprise night attack by Aboriginals." (ADB). Jack's book is an important study of Queensland, but also gives a detailed history of previous explorers.

(London, Jack) London, Charmian. THE BOOK OF JACK LONDON. [In Two Volumes.]. , 1921.

Price: US$725.00 + shipping

Description: [both vols. inscribed by Charmian] Illustrated with Photographs. New York: The Century Co., 1921. Original green cloth. First Edition of Charmian London's personal biography, copiously illustrated with photographic plates, of her husband who had died five years earlier. Quoting from her Preface, Here I give to the world my Jack London -- a virile creature compounded of curiosity and fearlessness, the very texture of fine sensibility, the loving heart and discerning intuitions of a woman, an ardent brain, and a divine belief in himself. And since he was first and foremost his own man, I render. also his own Jack London. This set is in very good-plus condition, with minor rubbing at the extremities and (as usual) the spine gilt rather dull. The front free endpaper of each volume is inscribed and signed by Charmian London to "Harry" Fish (her quotation marks) -- in Glen Ellen California in 1935. Vol I reads "Wishing you could have known the man, and not only his humble biographer --". Her Vol II inscription is "The first volume is preparation for this part of Jack's life, of course. And it treats of a place and of a persona you know. I hope you won't be disappointed. Yours very sincerely,". Loosely inserted is a post card postmarked July 10th 1935 in Rio Nido (on the Russian River), addressed to Charmian K. London but with the salutation "Dear Mrs. London" -- from "Harry" of that town; in it he says he received her card, and will call on her on July 17th -- which quite likely would be the day she gave and inscribed these two volumes to him. The Vol I half-title bears the Jack London "wolf's head" bookplate, a reduced version of which appears on each title page; presumably, this set had belonged to Charmian for 14 years. The Vol II half-title bears a tipped-on silver print of a photograph of Jack London at the wheel of a boat (the "Roamer"?).

LONDON, JACK & CHARMIAN LONDON. The Book of Jack London - By Charmian London. New York Century Company 1921, 1921.

Price: US$1500.00 + shipping

Description: First Edition, First Printing. Actor, producer, and director Hobart Bosworth copy with his bookplate in volume one. A remarkable man Hobart Bosworth (1867-1942) convinced Jack London to allow him to produce several early silent films based on his books in which Bosworth would appear. Regretfully, most of the films have been lost as no prints are known to have survived except his excellent adaptation of Burning Daylight (1914) in which Jack London, himself, made an appearance. Laid into this copy are two first edition pamphlets promoting two of Hobart BosworthÕs London films. The first pamphlet is entitled Bosworth Inc. Presents The Sea Wolf by Jack London in Seven Reels. Los Angeles: Bosworth Inc.: (1913) 8 pp. Illustrated with scenes from the movie. 8vo, single sheet folded to form 8 pp. Light horizontal creases where folded and tiny chips at spine fold. Includes a plot synopsis and Cast of Characters: the second pamphlet is entitled Bosworth Inc. Presents John Barleycorn by Jack London. Directed by Hobart Bosworth. Progressive Motion Picture Co. (1914) [4] pp. Illustrated with scenes from the movie. 8vo, single sheet folded to form 4 pages. Light horizontal creases where folded; otherwise fine. Includes a plot synopsis. The pamphlets are rare survivors. The clothbound books themselves are very good copies, the first volume has slight wear, the second volume has some rubbiing and fading of spine, and some slight fraying at the top and bottom of spine.
