Description: Limited edition of 1050 copies of these volumes. Finely bound by Rivière & Son and with their pallet stamp, polished powder blue calf with fully decorated gilt spines, marbled endpapers, dentelles, top edges gilt, others uncut, small 4to, vii, 174 + vii, 217 pp. The Bombay Edition is perhaps the most attractively printed of the various collected editions of Kipling's works, being set in the very appealing Florence Press type (designed by Herbert P. Horne) and printed on generously margined paper that was specially handmade for this edition and watermarked with Kipling's initials and elephant-head device. These volumes come from a particularly attractively bound set where the distinguished binders Rivière have matched the colour of the polished calf binding to the blue ink used on the title-page and for the initial letters of chapters from the text. Alberto Manguel had a (sadly incomplete) set of the Bombay Edition and wrote of his copy of Kim in 'A Reading Diary': 'The paper. is a light cream colour, the letters deep black and slightly raised, the initials Prussian blue'. Baloo, Bagheera, Kaa, Mowgli, Shere Khan - not to mention Rikki-tikki-tavi - could any child who reads, or is read, these stories ever forget their magic? Joints slightly worn, minor wear to extremities, a few minor blemishes to boards, lower fore-edge corner of front freee endpaper of first volume professionally repaired, otherwise a Very Good pair.
