A good clean copy overall with significant exterior shelf wear, cloth worn through at bottom cover edge and spine top and bottom, fore-corner tips worn through and top and bottom back strip top edge frayed, and bottom 2" section of spine cloth missing; interior very good, hinges and binding still solid, paper generally clean and lightly yellowed with only occasional light scattered foxing. This is the first printing, without ads at the back (or front)--copyright notice opposite lines four and six of the preface. This would be a great candidate for a binding restoration and is priced accordingly.

Advertisement in back dated January 1854. From the Bibliography of American Literature (BAL) 7610: "Binding A." Impressed decorations on front and back covers of book. Gilt lettering on spine of book. Pages are clean; binding is tight. Slipcase and sleeve are clean and undamaged. A fine copy. This is Nathaniel Hawthorne's third major romance and is about a man named Miles Coverdale and other residents of a utopian community called Blithesdale.

Although Hawthorne denied the connection, one cannot but notice the correspondence between the novel's Blithedale Farm and the utopian community of Brook Farm; Hawthorne had spent time there in the 1840s. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the First Edition. Brown publisher's cloth binding, decoratively stamped and ruled on the front cover; gilt titling on the spine. Clean text; viii, continues from 9 to page 288. First state, per Ahearn, with no adverts in the rear. Bumped corners, rubbing to head and foot of the spine, which has resulted in a chip to the head. There is some occasional spotting and the endpapers are tanned; in the rear the tanning has offset to the last page. Despite these flaws, a solid copy, and not unattractive. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good (Plus)/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

It examines what progress, if any, has been made to the human animal. Blithedale, like Brook Farm, was a would-be modern Arcadia along the lines of the anti-capitalist ideals of Charles Fourier, but in spite of the lofty ideals falls pray to the self-interested behavior of its members. Though this concept for a work of fiction may sound a bit heady, Henry James called it "the lightest, the brightest, the liveliest" of Hawthorne's "fictions." Hawthornes claim that the characters of the novel are "entirely fictitious" has been widely questioned and many suggest that Bronson Alcott, Emerson, Horace Mann , Margaret Fuller and Hawthorne himself can all be found in this novel.
