Issued as Armed Services Edition "N-32". Originally published by Duell, Sloan & Pearce. "The Big Rock Candy Mountain" was, in the lexicon of the American Hobo, easy living off the fat of the land; the phrase makes its appearance repeatedly in hobo ballads and poems. Description: SIGNED by the Author on the half title, thick 8vo (8 3/4" x 6" x 2"), light blue cloth with gilt lettering on spine, archival mylar-jacket added, [iv] + 515 pages. Wallace Stegner (1909-1993) was an American novelist, short story writer, environmentalist and historian. Probably his most famous book is THE BIG ROCK CANDY MOUNTAIN (1943). A semi-autobiographical novel, it is Stegner's attempt at the Great American Novel: the tragedy of a family striving for the American dream but ending up in shady, half-baked schemes. The novel is named after the folk song "Big Rock Candy Mountain" about a mythical paradise. SIGNED UNCOMMON WAR EDITION. Published in a slightly thicker format than other editions. Original blue covers are somewhat rubbed with wear (visible mainly along gutters, head & foot of spine); moderately faded cloth with a spot or two of discoloration, a bubble (upper right front cover), and bumping to corners (mainly the lower right front). Front hinge tender. Minor cocking. No dj. Laid in is a ticket stub from a reading given by Wallace Stegner at the Harbourfront Reading Series in Toronto. No previous owner marks. Light uniform age-toning with clean pages. According to Colberg, Wallace Stegner: A Descriptive Bibliography, the first printing was around 15,000 copies (A7.1.a). First Edition, second printing, war edition.

Anoblong 64mo (sexagesimo), it'sdesigned to fit in a soldier's pocket. For more on the Armed Services Editions, see this New York Times article describing their important history inspired by a show at the New York Historical Society. Colberg A7.2. Price: US$2695.00 + shipping

Description: First Edition, INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY STEGNER "For Jinny .Wally". Jinny was a very personal friend of many years. She and Stegner remained in touch with one another and were close for decades. 8vo, publisher’s original rust boards, the spine lettered in gilt, in the original dustjacket. 515 pp. A fine copy but for some subtle mellowing or evidence of age to the spine tips and wear to the jacket. The jacket does have some significant chipping to the spine panel and some edgewear. A FIRST EDITION PRESENTATION COPY OF THIS VERY IMPORTANT STEGNER TITLE. THE RECIPIENT WAS A PERSONAL FRIEND OF THE AUTHOR'S FOR MANY, MANY YEARS. In every sense this is a "big" book. It was the author's big book, it was a big source book for the author's ongoing writing. It is big in the sweep of its canvas through the developing West from Nevada to Saskatchewan. It is big in its characters who, come hell and high water, never abandoned their pursuit of fat lands beyond the next range. And it is biggest of all perhaps in the stature of the major American novelist which it reveals.
