Anthony Trollope; Michael Sadleir. The Shakespeare Head Edition of the Works of Anthony Trollope. The Shakespeare Head Press by Basil Blackwell, Oxford, 1929.

Price: US$891.87 + shipping

Description: A complete limited set of fourteen volumes of work by English novelist, Anthony Trollope. Fourteen volumes. Limited to five hundred and twenty-five copies. The Shakespeare Head edition. Written by Anthony Trollope, an English novelist and civil servant of the Victorian era. Among his best-known works is a series of novels collectively known as the Chronicles of Barsetshire, which revolves around the imaginary county of Barsetshire. He also wrote novels on political, social, and gender issues, and other topical matters. Edited by Michael Sadleir, a British publisher, novelist, book collector, and bibliographer. This set contains: An Autobiography which, although a best seller after his death, disappointed readers as they discovered that he maintained a strict daily writing quota and admitted to writing under commission. The Warden, the first book in the Chronicles of Barsetshire series, concerning Mr Septimus Harding, the meek, elderly warden of Hiram's Hospital. Doctor Thorne, in two volumes, which follows Doctor Thomas Thorne and his younger brother Henry in the wake of their father's death as they learn to fend for themselves. Barchester Towers, in two volumes, concerns the leading clergy of the cathedral city of Barchester. When the much loved bishop dies, all expectations are that his son, Archdeacon Grantly, will succeed him. Framley Parsonage, in two volumes, the story of Mark Robarts, a young vicar, settled in the village of Framley in Barsetshire with his wife and children. The Small House at Allington, in two volumes, following the Dale family, who live in the "Small House", a dower house intended for the widowed mother of the owner of the estate. The Last Chronicle of Barset, in four volumes, deploys characters from the earlier novels, whilst concentrating on the personnel associated with the cathedral. The main narrative thread is catalyzed by the loss of a cheque which had been in the possession of the Reverend Josiah Crawley, and the subsequent reactions of his friends and enemies. In the original green cloth binding with gilt. Externally, very smart with light shelf wear and the odd small mark to the board. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean throughout. Previous owner's bookplate to front pastedown. Very Good Indeed
