Edward Herbert. The Autobiography of Edward, Lord Herbert of Cherbury. Gregynog Press, Newtown, Montgomeryshire, 1928.

Price: US$153.93 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: 34x23cm, 93pp. With nine wood engravings by Horace Bray. Copy 207/250 (275) bound in full brown buckram with arms blocked in gilt to upper board, gilt title to backstrip. Arguably something of a hidden gem amongst those Gregynog books outside the ranks of the magnum opi. It stands out because of its unexpected scale - the first but least well-known Gregynog folio - and the wood engravings which are extraordinary in their diversity and detail, 'quite unlike any of [Bray's] previous work' (Harrop). The first in particular, a copy of a miniature by Isaac Oliver, has similar dense background detail and texture to that of Stephan Mrozeweski of whose work Bray must surely have been aware (although his abortive collaboration with Gregynog on Parsifal was not until eight years later). They provide further proof that the name of Bray, if not Maynard, deserves to be less fully eclipsed by his famous successors than it has been. The typography, and the large red initials for chapter openings, are also a distinct step up in achievement from the press's previous books. As John Hugh Jones recalled (De Zilverdistel catalogue) ‘ the book designer who fails to add richness and dignity to the folio page is missing a great opportunity’. Good (6cm stain to upper board, plus a little bubbling and some lighter marks as usual, the interior completely bright and clean with no foxing). Harrop 10
