First edition of this classic. 8vo, Xviii + 436pp, illustrated by engravings & lithographs after paintings by Edwin & Charles Landseer, & by the author. Quarter leather binding with blue cloth boards, binding worn & bumped particularly at spine (see pictures). Ex library with bookplates etc on front pastedown & endpapers, stamp on first page, number on spine, no other obvious library markings. Inner book has occasional grubby marks, pencil annotations & chipping, tear to one page (see picture).

Description: First edition. Fine binding of full leather, richly decorated spine, all edges marbled, marbled endpapers. Binding a little worn and scuffed at ends of spine, about very good. Sporting-themed private bookplate on front pastedown and small name label of someone of the same surname, likely the next generation to own the book. The bookplate covers partially a bookseller's ticket from a bookshop in New York 22, a post-WW II form of address. Owner's name in a contemporary hand, likely the first owner, on the blank preceding the frontispiece; on the same page is a catalog clipping from the London antiquarian firm of Bumpus offering another copy of the book, that one bound by Riviere; they describe the book as "one of the most interesting ever written" and extol the virtues of the first edition over inferior reprints. The closing episode of Season 2 of Downton Abbey, set in Scotland, includes a bit of deer stalking.
