Condition: Near Fine

Description: New York. Hyperion. 1991. First Edition/First Printing (1 in number line on copyright page). Hard Cover. Laminated pictorial boards with no dust jacket. Tiny hint of wear at the spine ends only. Condition is near fine. Many artist contributors some of which are listed in the photographs. Small format 18mo (5.5 x 4.5in). Introduction by John Updike. The image we have of Mickey Mouse is the classic head and two round ears imagined by Walt Disney sixty-four years ago. What is it about this simple set of interconnected spheres that has made Mickey Mouse one of the most recognized faces in modern history? In The Art of Mickey Mouse, artists, designers, illustrators, and cartoonists from around the world have captured the famous mouse who lives in our collective imagination. Mickey, who throughout his history has been a major figure in film and TV, is here newly incarnated by fine artists such as Andy Warhol and Keith Haring, illustrators such as Milton Glaser and Maurice Sendak, and cartoonists such as Charles Schulz and R. Crumb - and even by another American icon, Michael Jackson - into roles both serious and strange, familiar and alien. is perhaps the only shared muse of artists Charles Schulz, Andy Warhol, Maurice Sendak, Keith Haring, R. Crumb, and pop star Michael Jackson. This whimsical, often surprising collection of 100 full-color images reflects the diverse styles of world-renowned artists, illustrators, animators, sculptors, cartoonists, and designers--united in theme by the world's favourite rodent. John Updike explains in the introduction, "It's all in the ears. When Mickey Mouse was born, in 1928, the world of early cartoon animation was filled with two-legged zoomorphic humanoids, whose strange half-black faces were distinguished one from another chiefly by the ears." He goes on to point out that Mickey Mouse's ears--in defiance of three-dimensional space--are always shown as two perfectly round circles, no matter the angle at which he holds his head, and discloses that if it weren't for Disney's wife Lillian, Mickey might have been named Mortimer. Whether you're an art lover or Mickey Mouse fan, this compilation is sure to fascinate you.

Condition: Fine

Description: First edition. Oblong quarto. Illustrated. Introduction by John Updike. About fine with slightly bumped corners in a near fine dustwrapper with corresponding bump. Artists interpret the world's favorite mouse. Inscribed by Updike to Herb Yellin. Herb Yellin was the founder and publisher of Lord John Press and the most frequent of Updike's fine press collaborators. He named his press after noting that the list of authors he wanted to publish all shared the same first name, chief among them John Updike, his favorite. *Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu* became the press's first book in 1977 with 10 more to follow over the next 23 years. Yellin's friendship with Updike grew with each new limited edition benefitting his already enormous Updike collection, with Updike himself contributing copies of new editions of his books - often inscribed. In a 2010 interview with Yellin he noted that Updike ".liked that if anything ever happened to his own collection, he had my collection on the opposite side of the country." A notable association, and a surprisingly uncommon edition.
