Description: First edition 1878. Complete with all plates although one plate has been remounted on a new sheet of paper (of an contemporary age & hardly noticeable). Contents slightly shaken. Bound in the original highly decorated gilt and black cloth with crossed tennis rackets with three tennis balls beneath. Top edges gilt. Corners lightly bumped, top and bottom of spine rubbed and slightly frayed. The whole generally darkened. Rear spine hinge rubbed and slightly split. Generally a very good copy of this scarce book, This is an unusual copy in that some marks and notes have been made to the text and illustrations, mostly in pencil but one in ink. These are contemporary. 226 p.

Julian Marshall was tennis correspondent to The Field, and some chapters in his book first appeared in the magazine in 1876 and 1877. The Annals of Tennis was both a history and a handbook, and according to Patrick Scott, Curator of the William D. Haggard III Tennis Collection, "intact copies are rare as the book was frequently kept in the dedans of tennis courts for reference." The beautiful Eastlake style binding is decorated with a centerpiece of crossed rackets over tennis balls surrounded by a geometric design in gilt and black.
