Description: Octavo, royal blue cloth covers with gilt titles and decorations, rear cover stamped in blind with elaborate publisher's device. Brown endpapers. 420 pages. Former owner name and city (Chicago) and date (May 20. 80) on half-title page in ink. Rear hinge cracked. Wear at head and foot of spine, and scratch near center of spine. A little spotting on rear cover. Gilt on front cover is bright, spine is a little dull. The first American edition was published by Harper and Brothers in paper wrappers in 1877. According to Smith,( p. 214), The Belford Brothers published the first Canadian edition in hardcover, also in 1877, and provided sheets (and a new state of the title page) to the Craig and Taylor firm in Detroit. Thus, it may be that this is the first U.S. edition in hardcover.
