Description: 221 pages of text including an index. Red hardcover cloth binding is slightly sunned on the spine and top edge; spine gilt is thoroughly rubbed, but remains readable. The bottom corners are lightly bumped, with moderate rubbing to the extremities and overall minimal soiling. Lacks the dustjacket; protected in archival mylar. Illustrated with thirteen plates, most of which are photographs. One plate is loosening from the book, and the fore-edge is slightly wrinkled and soiled, with a few small tears not affecting the image. Page 31 is lighly creased at the top edge from a fold-over. Safari, Big Game Hunting, Africa, Northeastern Rhodesia, Nyasaland, Portuguese East Africa. The text is clean and unmarked. First English edition.

Description: First edition of this classic work on the African elephant, from a hunter's point of view, mostly about collecting ivory and various measurements and weights. Many big game hunters in old Africa has amassed a fortune by collecting and selling the ivory at the cost of a few shillings for the bullets. Denis Lyell was one of them, Selous and Bell were his friends. Bound in red cloth with an elephant head in gold on the front, illustrated with photographs, a number sticker on the spine, overall a very good book.
