Kenneth Galbraith. The Affluent Society. Houghton Mifflin, 1958.

Price: US$22.49 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: The Affluent Society by Kenneth Galbraith HCDJ 1958 1st edition 1st printing published by Houghton Mifflin John Kenneth Galbraith's international bestseller The Affluent Society is a witty, graceful and devastating attack on some of our most cherished economic myths. As relevant today as when it was first published over forty years ago, Galbraith's classic text on the 'economics of abundance', lays bare the hazards of individual and social complacency about economic inequality. Why worship work and productivity if many of the goods we produce are superfluous - artificial 'needs' created by high-pressure advertising? Why begrudge expenditure on vital public works while ignoring waste and extravagance in the private sector of the economy? Classical economics was born in a harsh world of mass poverty, and has left us with a set of preconceptions ill-adapted to the realities of our own richer age. And so, too often, 'the bland lead the bland'. Our unfamiliar problems need a new approach, and the reception given to this famous book has shown the value of its fresh, lively ideas. 'A compelling challenge to conventional thought' The New York Times 'He shows himself a truly sensitive and civilized man, whose ideas are grounded in the common culture of the two continents, and may serve as a link between them; his book is of foremost importance for them both' The Times Literary Supplement John Kenneth Galbraith (1908-2006) was a Canadian-American economist. A Keynesian and an institutionalist, Galbraith was a leading proponent of 20th-century American liberalism and progressivism. Galbraith was the author of 30 books, including The Economics of Innocent Fraud, The Great Crash: 1929, and A History of Economics. "some jacket wear and tear, fading, a little underlining inside"

Description: 8vo. [9], x-xii, [3], 2-368, [2] pp. Orange cloth with silver lettering on the front board and spine. ANB, Alexander J. Field, "Galbraith, John Kenneth". The Affluent Society is Galbraith's best-known book. It builds on one of his early publications, titled American Capitalism. In The Affluent Society, Galbraith describes what was then the American economy: an economy which prioritized the production of consumer and military products by the private sector. Galbraith also discusses the advertising industry, a tool which he saw as increasing consumer wants for such products. He also elaborates on the credit system, which helped corporations increase and manage the volume of their sales. Ultimately, this economy increased consumerism, but reduced the ability of the household to save extra income. The author laments the U.S. Government of the post-war era, as he saw them preoccupied with military expenditures rather than investment in schools, arts, and public services. Galbraith's books are accessible to educated readers, not just economists. His poignant insight into the American economy made him one of the most important intellectual figures of the twentieth century. He was an economic advisor to every Democratic President from Franklin Roosevelt to Bill Clinton. A Keynesian, Galbraith argued against tax cuts, and believed that a government should invest in its citizens' infrastructure, health, art, and even in research and development for new and helpful technologies. His opponents often referred to his views as radical, but he is largely remembered as a progressive economist who acutely understood the institution that is the American private sector. A Near Fine book with a small concavity to the crown of the spine; jacket is price-clipped with a few hints of edge wear and rubbing.

Description: 1st Edition. Hardcover. Signed by Author. Inscribed to Joey Smallwood. 8vo. 368 pp. First Edition, early impression, (14th), of this landmark work, depicting a consumer culture gone wild, rich in goods but poor in the social services that make for community. "One of those rare works that forces a nation to re-examine its values" - The New York Times, April 30, 2006, nicely Inscribed by John Kenneth Galbraith to Premier Joey Smallwood of Newfoundland on the front free endpaper. 'For the honourable J.R. Smallwood, with my warm regards, John Kenneth Galbraith'. 'Then I had a long and close association with the most notable figure in Newfoundland history and one vital in that of Canada as well. That was Joseph Robert Smallwood. Joey Smallwood, one of the most diversely alert and interesting political leaders of this century and a central figure in the anniversary celebrations of these days. Joey Smallwood was several times in touch with me in Cambridge called me here to St. John's on one or two occasions for meetings, was one of the most interesting (and I must say unpredictable) political figures of his time. I now tell of something which until this moment is still unknown. He once pressed me hard and seriously to return to the land of my birth as head of this university. Under the arrangement that would be proposed I would retain a part-time commitment to Harvard. Not without difficulty I persuaded him that this would not be good for this university, would be unacceptable at Harvard and possibly questionable for Galbraith. Had I accepted, there would have been one certain and sad result: I would not today be receiving an honorary degree. Excerpted from the Convocation address by Dr. John Kenneth Galbraith at Memorial University Of Newfoundland - 75th anniversary of the founding of Memorial University College in 1925. (A long association well-documented). A near fine copy in brick coloured cloth, black morocco - style label with gilt titles to the spine, (some hand notations throughout), in a bright, fresh dustwrapper with some minimal use.

Description: First Edition. Walter Heller's copy, with his stamp on front endpaper, "Please Return to Walter W. Heller." Heller was a leading American economist, a University of Minnesota professor and chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors under Kennedy and Johnson. Galbraith was probably the best known economist in the world during his lifetime. In The Affluent Society, his most famous book, Galbraith coined the phrase "the conventional wisdom," and argued for increased government spending on public projects and social programs, which no doubt influenced Heller to propose the "war on poverty" program to LBJ in 1963. Galbraith and Heller were good friends, both Keynesians and close advisors to JFK and LBJ, but they disagreed sharply over Heller's historic tax cut in 1964, widely credited with fostering the economic boom of the sixties. About fine in dustjacket with yellow background uniformly faded on spine panel, else very good, with shallow chipping and wear at spine ends, price-clipped. Signed by Galbraith on laid in publisher's slip. Under "With the compliments of the author," Galbraith has crossed out "the author" and signed it "Ken Galbraith."

Description: First edition. First printing. Inscribed by the author on the first free endpaper: “For C L. Pawlowski / with all good wishes / John Kenneth Galbraith / 1969.” A near fine copy, square and unread. A little bumping to the head and foot of the spine. Mild traces of offsetting to the pastedowns and endpapers, causing a slight mark to the bottom of the ffep. In a bright, near fine and unclipped dust jacket. The spine slightly sunned. A tiny, .25’’ closed tear at the top of the front panel, with a bit of dried tape adhesive at the same point to the verso. A beautiful copy overall, scarce inscribed. Housed in a custom marbled box. The Harvard economist’s most influential work, selected by The Modern Library as one of the greatest non-fiction books of the 20th Century. Galbraith challenges conventional wisdom against the new realities of post-war America, which he describes as rich in the private sector and relatively poor in the public sector. He argues that all essential consumer needs have been satisfied, and that a new system want creation has emerged, created by vested corporate interests. This endless devotion to consumption and economic growth - a more is better mentality - is at the expense of the public good and generally a threat to economic security. Though many of Galbraith’s ideas were met with strong criticism by other economists - notably by F.A. Hayek - The Affluent Society would influence the counter culture movement of the 1960's, as well as liberal politics of the time, which promised to reallocate affluence to public causes.

Price: US$2500.00 + shipping

Description: First edition of the economist's landmark work. Octavo, original cloth with titles to the spine in silver. Boldly signed by John Kenneth Galbraith on the front free endpaper. Laid in this book is an autographed signed letter to Mr. James English, President of The Connecticut Trust Company dated December 19, 1966. Fine in a bright near fine dust jacket with light wear. A very sharp example of this book. John Kenneth Galbraith's breakthrough as a best-selling author came with "The Affluent Society" for which he was honored with the American Economic Association's prestigious presidency. The book also influenced both the Great Society program and the rise of the American "counterculture" in the 1960's. Listed on Modern Library's 100 great nonfiction books of the twentieth century. Galbraith's ideas often addressed the influence of the potential market power of large corporations (Dunn and Pressman, 2005). He believed that corporations could become price makers, rather than price takers, by weakening the accepted principle of consumer sovereignty (Galbraith, 1970). This, in turn, allowed corporations to efficiently increase the production of their goods.
