LAMB, Charles.. THE ADVENTURES OF ULYSSES.. London: printed by T. Davison Whitefriars for the Juvenile Library no. 41 Skinner-Street Snow-Hill, 1808.

Price: US$844.70 + shipping

Description: 12mo, engraved frontispiece and additional title page (both probably washed), and pp. vi, 203, [1] advertisements; with small library numeral stamps on title verso and p. 27; bound in full olive morocco gilt by Riviere; a bit sunned, foot of spine damaged by sticky tape (but sound); edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Bookplates of Samuel F. Barger and Manhattan College. First edition. This is one of the children's books which Lamb published with William and Mary Godwin's 'Juvenile Library', the business they ran from their house in Skinner St, Finsbury, from 1807; they lived there for some fifteen years before being evicted in 1822. Lamb's work is essentially a retelling of The Odyssey for children, although in his preface he (slightly oddly) describes it as 'a supplement to the Adventures of Telemachus', perhaps to make it seem less daunting for children. Osborne II p. 574.
