John H. Watson. The Adventures of The Peerless Peer. The Aspen Press, Boulder, Colorado, 1974.

Price: US$25.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: BH5 - A first edition (stated) hardcover book in very condition in very good dust jacket. Dust jacket has some wrinkling and chipping on the edges and corners, dust jacket and book have some bumped corners, light discoloration and shelf wear. Although not marked in any way, this copy comes from the personal collection of Otto Penzler, legendary editor and founder of the Mysterious Press, an award-winning icon in the genre. Philip Jose Farmer (Edited by) 7.75"x5.25", 111 pages. Satisfaction Guaranteed. THE "PEERLESS PEER" of the title is none other than Lord Greystoke, the jungle-born scion of a noble English family, a duke in Britain but in his larger estate of Central Africa a king. The time is 1916, at the height of the Great War. The east wind has grown appallingly cold in England, and when the Foreign Office learns that a deadly formula has been stolen from the Allies by Sherlock Holmes' old foe, the German agent Von Bork, Mycroft calls his younger bother out of retirement to save the Empire from the greatest danger that ever threatened it. Watson, of course, accompanies Holmes on this perilous mission, and his account of their adventure is one of the most thrilling narratives the good doctor ever penned. As its editor, Philip Jose Farmer, remarks in his foreword to the tale: "The adventure at hand is singular for many reasons. We are made aware that Holmes made a second visit to Africa, going far beyond Khartoum. We are given some illumination on the careers of the two greatest American aviators and spies in the early years of World War I. we learn that Watson was married for the fourth time, and the destruction of civilization rivalling ancient Egypt's is recorded for the first time. Holmes' contribution to apiology and how he used it to save himself and others is related herein." Mr. Farmer, the American biographer of Lord Greystoke and a long-time student of the Sherlock Holmes tales, is uniquely qualified to bring this particular adventure to the reading public. For when Holmes and Watson are lost somewhere in British East Africa, having escaped their German captors, it is Greystokes who rescues them. And it is because of his intervention that this mission, undertaken out of patriotism, turns into perhaps the most unusual - and certainly the most profitable - problem ever solved by the world's greatest detective.
